Problems in the digestive system should not be neglected. There are different possible digestive system disorders or diseases that are most often neglected by many people. The most common digestive problem is the acid reflux or gastro-esophageal reflux disease, mostly known as heartburn. Acid reflux affects different ages from infants to young children and adults as well. This disorder should be given special attention because it can lead to a more serious problem that could affect the respiratory system.

Acid reflux is determined through the symptoms associated with it. Symptoms such as a burning sensation in the chest or throat, wheezing, hoarseness or other symptoms associated to it should never be neglected because these symptoms of acid reflux also are similar to heart attack.

An individual with these symptoms should immediately consult a doctor to determine if they have acid reflux disease or symptoms of a heart attack. Once the doctor has diagnosed the individual with acid reflux, they should take proper medications to aid in this condition to prevent further problems.

Fortunately, advancements in medical treatment have been introduced lately, making it possible for individuals with acid reflux to undergo medical surgery, as such, providing a permanent remedy for acid reflux in a fast surgical procedure. As most people know, acid reflux or heartburn can occur at anytime but are likely to occur after having a heavy meal with high acidic foods. Also, food with spices such as garlic, onions, red or black pepper and chili powder can cause the condition to flare. Ginger, however, is a natural remedy used to relieve heartburn.

Here are some foods that should be avoided by individuals with acid reflux. Fatty foods like hamburgers and hotdogs is one of the risks in triggering this painful condition. Certain vegetables like cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, and broccoli causes acid reflux also. Most of all, avoid caffeine found in teas, coffee and sodas. Caffeine causes acid gastric secretion that can lead to the problem.

There are other ways to aid the elimination of acid reflux that does not involve eating, this is done by limiting your food intake. Usually, heavy meals in one time can cause acid reflux than eating small portions of foods in every meal. Eating heavy meals can result in stomach problems due to foods unable to breakdown properly for stomach consumption, therefore causing acid reflux.

Acid reflux is a condition that needs attention. It can lead to worse conditions if unattended. Individuals should take preventive measures to avoid possible occurrences of acid reflux, whereas, avoiding also the foods that causes acid reflux in an individual to happen. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease,slimming workout pants for women, or GERD, is the medical term for what most people refer to as acid reflux disease.

Gastroesophageal is a relatively new term for acid reflux disease. It has been used for approximately the past 20 years. Before that it was just referred to as heartburn. But heartburn is just one of the symptoms of GERD. Some of the other symptoms of GERD are regurgitation, hoarseness or laryngitis, the feeling of a lump in the throat, coughing, bad breath,slimming workout pants for women, asthma, difficulty swallowing,slimming workout pants for women, and water brash. Some people with GERD do not have any symptoms at all.

What happens to cause GERD? It starts with acid in the stomach washing back up into the esophagus repeatedly, which happens if the lower esophageal sphincter becomes relaxed.

Some foods and beverages can cause the lower esophageal sphincter to relax. This is not an all-inclusive list but some of the most common are: chocolate, licorice, peppermint, fatty foods, caffeinated beverages, and alcohol. Barbiturates, calcium-channel blockers, Diazepam and Sumitriptan are some of the medications that cause the lower esophageal sphincter to relax and allow acid back in to the esophagus.

Lifestyle changes can be very effective in helping to control GERD although over- the-counter medications, prescription medications,slimming workout pants for women, and possibly surgery, may also be necessary. Some of the lifestyle changes that may help control GERD include: losing weight if you are overweight, avoiding high-fat foods, not lying down right after eating, not eating large heavy meals (i.e. don�t overstuff yourself�especially on fatty foods), and stopping smoking if you are a smoker.

GERD can be a difficult disease to diagnosis. That is because of the wide range of symptoms people can experience and the complication of some people not experiencing any symptoms at all. In some cases a physician will not do tests right away but will first prescribe over-the-counter or prescription medications to see if they clear up the symptoms.

If the medications do not take care of the symptoms then a physician will likely do one or more of the following diagnostic tests: x-rays with a barium swallow, an upper gastrointestinal x-ray series, an upper endoscopy, an esophageal manometry, or a 24-hour pH probe. The reason physicians may try over-the-counter or prescription medications before running tests is because some of the tests, such as the upper endoscopy and pH probe are invasive, and because of the costs of some of the tests.

After diagnosing GERD, a physician will recommend lifestyle changes such as the ones mentioned earlier in this article to help control the GERD, and depending on the severity will recommend over-the-counter medications or will prescribe a stronger medication by prescription. The medications may need to be continued indefinitely because over half of all people who stop taking their medications after getting their symptoms under control have a recurrence within a year.

If the medications do not alleviate the symptoms, surgery may be needed. Surgery is also an alternative to having to take medications indefinitely. A procedure called a �Nissen fundoplication� is the type of surgery typically done to relieve GERD. In the surgery the upper part of the stomach located near the esophagus, called the �fundus,� is wrapped around the lower esophagus. Doing this strengthens the barrier function of the lower esophagus, thus preventing gastreosophageal reflux and repairing the main irregularity that occurs in people suffering from GERD. The surgery is usually done laparoscopically. It is considered a safe surgery (but remember any surgery carries risks) that typically gives good results.

Acid reflux makes suffers feel miserable. Sleeping is a nightly challenge. There’s a moment of misery after every meal. But, there are things you can do. Use these tips to reduce or prevent the effects of acid reflux.

Do you smoke? If so, you need to quit now. Smoking can cause acid reflux by corrupting your digestive system. This will result in more stomach acid and frequent occurrences of acid reflux. Finally, your esophageal sphincter is weakened. That’s why you need to butt out today.

Stop eating for a period of three hours or more before going to sleep. When you are upright, any food in your stomach and the gastric acid settles down in your stomach. Because of gravity, these acids can rise into the esophagus when you are not sitting or standing, causing heartburn. If you’re up for a couple of hours before bed, you can digest your food.

Heart Attack

Acid reflux can be so incredibly hurtful at times that it may cause you to think it could be a heart attack. Don’t ignore chest pain! You could be experiencing a heart attack. Call your doctor at once to determine the cause. You never want it to be the case that a misdiagnosis on your part led to more serious issues.

Alcoholic beverages can make acid reflux worse. Besides causing acid to begin to build up and eat away at your stomach lining, alcohol worsens acid reflux. Do not drink too much while out with friends if you don’t want a lot of discomfort later that night.

To sleep well at night and prevent acid reflux, you may want to place a wedge underneath the mattress in order to keep your head raised. You can do a variety of things to help elevate the mattress. You can also get a bed that is raised electronically.

Be sure to savor your food. Don’t eat too much at one time. It may help your condition to eat smaller meals instead of eating until you are completely full. Instead of eating too fast, slow down and chew your food at a more relaxed pace. Eating quickly or eating too much can make acid reflux worse. One way to slow down is to lay down your fork after each bite.

Use slippery elm lozenges to treat your acid reflux. These lozenges contain slippery elm bark, which provides a protective layer to your digestive tract. When it is in lozenges, it relieves the coughing that comes with acid reflux and it soothes throat irritation. Health food stores generally carry this product.

Acid Reflux Disease

Chew a stick of gum, preferrably cinnamon, after your meal. Saliva production is increased when you chew. Saliva works to neutralize stomach acid. Also, chewing gum causes people to swallow, which helps clear away acid from the esophagus. Fruit-flavored gum will accomplish this too. Mint gums are not a good idea, as they cause the sphincter of the esophagus to relax, making matters worse.

Acid reflux disease is not a condition that you should try to diagnose yourself. If you think you might have acid reflux disease, see a doctor and find out for sure. There are other disorders that are similar in effect to acid reflux. Your doctor has the ability to run tests that will help figure out if it’s really acid reflux.

You should have your dinner three hours before sleeping. If you retire to bed at 11pm, be done eating by 8pm. When you lie down with a full stomach, it puts extra pressure on the LES muscle. The result is more intense acid reflux.

Gluten can frequently trigger acid reflux. The less wheat, oats and barley you eat, the better. There are some grains, such as millet and quinoa that can actually aid digestion.

Steer clear of alcohol if you suffer from acid reflux. Drinking alcohol can cause acid reflux and damage the lining in your stomach. Do not drink too much while out with friends if you don’t want a lot of discomfort later that night.

To help decrease the chances of acid reflux, make sure that you do not lay down for approximately two or more hours after you eat. Gravity is the most obvious method for beating acid reflux. Based on your body and what you’ve eaten, you may need to wait longer before you can recline.

Do not smoke if you want to prevent acid reflux. Quitting smoking can help your fight against acid reflux among many other health benefits. Smoking increases stomach acids while slowing down the digestive process. Smoking also decreases the amount of saliva produced. Quit today to feel better tomorrow.

Consider consuming slipper elm lozenges. The main ingredient, slippery elm bark, will coat your digestive system with a protective layer. It can also help relieve any coughing reflux may cause. Health food stores are the most likely place to find slippery elm lozenges.

    Today I want to share with you a story that I share in the Introduction of my new ebook, The 30 Day Heartburn Solution.

    Several years ago I gave a talk at a local library on acid reflux.   This is a condition where stomach acid refluxes into the esophagus and burns the lining resulting in heartburn.  If this happens chronically it can damage the esophageal lining.  This is known as GERD (Gastro-esophageal reflux disease).

    In my talk I explained in detail why heartburn and GERD are not caused by too much stomach acid, but in fact, NOT ENOUGH.  

    I also explained the connection between the chronic use of antacids (Tums, Rolaids, Alka Seltzer) and acid-blocking medications (Prilosec, Zantac, Pepcid) with nutritional deficiencies, bone loss and further digestive problems.

    I figured most of the audience was taking an antacid or an acid blocker so I was shocked when there were no questions at the end.   In fact, people even applauded!  I guess that’s because with a little education it’s not that hard to understand why acid reflux is not caused by too much acid.

    However, not everyone was as convinced as I’d thought.

    A few days later I got an email from “Sarah,” one of the attendees.  A long time heartburn sufferer, she was intrigued by my talk.  She went to her doctor who was prescribing her Nexium, and not surprisingly, the doctor convinced her I was dead wrong and that all the research and science supports the over production of acid as the root cause of heartburn.

    Boy did she let me have it in an email.   In a somewhat demeaning tone she told me that I’m not a doctor, that I should do further research and that the theory of low acid is flat out wrong.

    Two YEARS later I received an email with the subject line that read, “I owe you an apology.”

    It was from Sarah.

    She wrote:

    “I attended a lecture you gave at the Forbes Library a few years or so ago on the subject of acid reflux and heartburn.  I was intrigued, but when I checked with my gastroenterologist, he assured me that the science supported his approach, and so I wrote you suggesting you limit yourself to the science.

    Meantime, I got worse and worse, and found myself enduring heartburn even though I was taking 40mg of Nexium daily.  I reconsidered, if not the science, at least the logic of your assertions.  If my stomach had virtually no acid as a result of taking Nexium, how could I be suffering from hyperacidity (too much acid)? So I decided to try some science on myself, to test the hypothesis that hypoacidity (low acid) was the problem.  While actually suffering heartburn, and contemplating taking a second Nexium of the day, I took acid instead.  Well, it worked, and I continued my experimentation.

    I have to say, I was skeptical of the ‘caused by not enough acid’ theory, but now I am convinced. I feel like an addict cured.”

    1. So what about deMeester scores for acidity using 24hr pH or Bravo 48hr monitoring?

      Sorry. Whilst some people are indeed hypoacidic, there are so many that actually are hyperacidic.

      Anyone who wants to know where they stand should get themselves checked out by a gastroenterologist.

      I classify this kind of advert and advertiser along with snake oil salesmen.

      • Thanks for your kind comment and accusation.

        I always encourage people to get the standard GI tests to rule out other things.

        It appears the tests you mention assess the acidity in the esophagus, not the stomach. If there’s acid reflux, of course those tests will show up positive for too much acid. And of course, the standard medical treatment will then be prescribing acid blockers. But the esophagus doesn’t produce acid. The HCl pumps in the stomach produce it. Acid reflux in the esophagus is acid winding up in the wrong place at the wrong time.

        But what do I know? I’m just a “snake oil salesman” showing people how a simple traditional foods diet can take away decades of heartburn.

      • If eating real foods and healing yourself naturally without involving big pharm is your idea of “snake oil” than I think snake oil is where I would rather go.

      • Why would one even use that term “snake oil”? Just curious because it makes me crazy when well informed and educated people are outed like this in a public format instead of a direct email to the individual. It seems like you have something important to say so just say it. I like interesting intelligent debates.

    2. On the rare occasion that I get heartburn now, I take a teaspoon of Apple Cider Vinegar (with a water chaser) and am quickly relieved of any discomfort.

      Why not try it, you’ve got nothing (but your heartburn) to lose.

    Almost 10 years of baking soda, Nexium until Aetna wanted me to try something else, imagine, a large bottle of chewable acid reducers a week.

    It began after going to bed so I’ve slept inclined head on 3 pillows until recently becoming GERD with projectile vomiting.
    I could hit my dog across the room it was gross.. burns like hell in mouth, throat.. until today Dec 27-2011, I’ve not been able to just bent over, they say I have a hiatal hernia and my flap stays open.. yuck.. so I have to squat to put on my shoes.. I’ve had an upper GI, one endoscopy and since Oct I was told ASAP I need to have the flap fixed. A general surgeon will operate and turn my stomach more on it’s side so the flap will close better.. what ?

    This afternoon it was like a heart attack.. I drank 3 whole swallows from the ACV bottle.. I ate my first bowl of chili in all those years tonight.. I needed to tell you guys.. Gastro Drs. aren’t in the loop.. their in Nexiums pockets..

    Ok, no food all day, traveled from CA to MI to Mom’s house.

    I’m 45 years old and 1-2 times per year I get a heart attack like reflux episode that lasts hours. Empty stomach and the first bite of my Mom’s beef stew marinated in onions, and wham, have to leave the table. Chewed a half of a Zantac 150 to no avail (usually works). Cannot get anything down.

    After being diagnosed with GERD/acid relux for the past 10 yrs and taking prescription after prescription of Nexium/Prilose and several other very expensive prescriptions, I had come to accept this was going to my lifestyle.

    A friend, at dinner, told me about ACV and how it has helped her with her acid reflux and side effect was weight loss.

    I just tried the ACV and am slowly feeling better.

    But to the others whom it does not work, try an apple. Seriously, apples work great for me.

    Some better than others. I want to say that Gala apples work good as well as granny smith and maybe red delicious apples. And the smaller apples (which I don’t remember what they are called.)

    I have suffered from acid reflux since 1988.
    I ran out of my medication last night and the reflux hit me like a dagger in my chest.

    I grabbed a bottle of no name cider vinegar out of the fridge and took down a shot with a water chaser @ 4:30am and voila the pain was gone.

    Got food poisoning. Threw up for two days then ended up with horrible heartburn. Googled for cures and found out about ACV.

    Went to the doctor today and was diagnosed with acid reflux. Been having pretty severe indigestion, and pretty much all the other symptoms of the nasty acid disease.

    Tums were a major part of my bedtime routine. The doctor prescribed me Omeprazole for the acid reflux.

    I took four 750 mg Tums at about 1 pm and then one Omeprazole around 5:15 pm. By about 7 pm I had the worst case of stomach acid indigestion I have ever had. I got dizzy and sweaty and literally felt like I was going to start vomiting stomach acid. It was SO AWFUL!!!

    I had heard in the past that ACV was great for acid indigestion, but never tried it in the middle of an acid attack. I chugged a tablespoon with some water. I figured if it made me vomit then “oh well”– I was so desperate that I was willing to try anything!

    I was literally feeling 90% better within 10 minutes!!! Praise the LORD for apple cider vinegar!

    It has been a few hours since I took the ACV and I have eaten a non-greasy meal since. I am somewhat starting to feel acidic/indigestion again, so think I will sip another smaller dose.

    I am so amazed and excited! I plan to stick with the ACV instead of continuing the Omeprazole.

    Seems counter-intuitive to drink something acidic to control stomach acid, but Apple Cider Vinegar works for me.

    You don’t have to drink it in water. I use ACV to make a pickled tomato and cucumber salad, sometimes with onions, and little salt and pepper.

    Drink some water along with it and you’ve got your cure!

    Have had GERD for years. Keep viscus lidocaine and Gaviscon on hand.

    My attacks are as bad as a heart attack and last for hours. I take Prilosec daily but sometimes, stress will kick off the attack. I am a RN and did not believe the posts above but I was desperate an hour ago and I have been sipping white vinegar and water.

    It is working slowly but the pain is much better. Waiting longer to see if it goes away completely before laying down for the night.

    My husband SUFFERED for 9 months with severe stomach pain.

    The Dr’s could not figure out what was wrong without doing a scope of his GI tract. We do not have health insurance and could not afford the scope or even the office visit to the specialist. Drs just kept adding more PPIs he was taking 80mg of Prilosec twice a day.

    Apple cider vinegar works to a degree, but it is NOT a cure.

    For three months now I am using a restricted diet, strong probiotics, digestive enzymes but nothing is curing the heartburn and stomach spasms.

    ACV helps take away the worse of the symptoms, but if I forget to take it, the symptoms jump right back.

    Does any bona fide, qualified medical doctor or academic out there know of a test that determines if one has too much or too little stomach acid production?

    After taking Prilosec and other treatments for GERD for years, I was determined to get off prescription meds altogether.

    I read all the glowing reports about ACV and bought a bottle of Braggs with “the mother” and tried it for a week.

    I was bitterly disappointed that it didn’t work for me. I was still taking TUMS and occasionally baking soda (sodium bicarb)throughout the day to try to stop the burning. I can’t believe it worked so well for all the people writing on this site yet it didn’t work for me.

    I’ve taken Zantac for years for acid reflux. When I changed my diet to a diabetic type diet, the acid reflux disappeared.

    Lately, I’ve fallen off the diet wagon and the reflux returned. Last night I realized I was out of Zantac and it was too late to go out. It was so bad I frantically searched the web for answers.

    I had a lot of problems with heartburn over ten years ago.

    I took Nexium for a year but it wasn’t long lasting. I then began eating tums and that seemed to control it at the time but it kept coming back within days or even hours.

    I suffered from a heartburn/acid reflux problem for several years, though admittedly, never went to a Doc for confirmation (I’ve always been weary of prescription drugs and the side effects).

    I got that burn in my chest and throat mostly when I went to bed, but at other times as well. I mostly used Pepto, (though it only gave very temporary relief), but nothing really worked.     I originally bought the ACV due to all the stuff said about helping weight loss. I got food poisoning one weekend and after I started to heal up I was getting horrible acid reflux to the point I wanted to cry.

    I did some research on Google and 90% of the remedies said to take some ACV.

    Low and behold I had a bottle of organic ACV in my fridge. The stuff is pure disgusting tasting so I mixed a tablespoon or more with a cup of water and down the hatch it went (still horrid) chased it with plain bottled water.

    Less then 5 minutes later, I was feeling much better for the next few hours till I had to do it again. But it is well worth it because heartburn and acid reflux is horrible.

    I am amazed. I was looking for relief for acid reflux as I do not have insurance and did not want to take powerful drugs. I was already living off Pepcid AC and tums around the clock.

    I’m a singer bud. I have tried everything for silent reflux. Including 80 mg of nexxium a day. It doesn’t stop reflux it just changes what’s being refluxed….I tried acv as a straight shot before but it burned my throat (it was already aggravated by acid) so I ditched it but ill try it again.

    I would love to hear from singers who suffer from reflux.

    I’ve had 2 endoscopies, barium x-rays, ultrasound, blood tests and a laryngoscopy. The doctors couldn’t find anything significant. The acid trickles down into my trachea, which houses the vocal cords, and into my lungs.

    You must read this if you are thinking about taking ACV. I am in good physical shape but like to consume a few alcoholic beverages on a regular basis.

    I been suffering from heartburn for 10 years did not do anything about it. Five weeks ago I woke up in the middle of the night with severe chest pains and could not breath, felt like heart attack, fell into a panic attack.

    Drove myself to the ER at the hospital. After all kinds of tests (blood, ECG, EKG etc), the doctor determined I was suffering from GERD. Prescribed Pantoprazole and told me to curb my alcohol and caffeine intake

    I took the medication for two weeks and conditions improved where I could sleep, drink and eat. I am not big on taking medication so I stopped taking the medication. Within five days the GERD was back causing me to wake up every night suffering from asthma attacks and chest pains (it was becoming a living hell).

    I stumbled upon this site and through desperation started taking ACV. Within three days, I was able to sleep through most of the night. Would have to wake up at 4:00 a.m. to clear my throat from acid build up

    This past Thursday and Friday (total of 7 days consuming ACV) I slept through the entire night. Felt incredible – so last night was out for dinner had 1 beer, two glasses of wine, chocolate cake. I forgot to take my ACV prior to bedtime.

    I did not think this would work but I was desperate for relief.

    5 years ago I heard about this after having been on Prevacid (and many other variants) for almost 6 years.

    I decided to give it a try and found it MUCH more effective than any of the prescriptions I had been taking.

    There is one caveat though: it works best if taken BEFORE eating, as afterwards it seems to add more fuel to the fire rather than preventing it in the first place. I used Braggs ACV (with the ‘mother’) as it was more palatable than the commercial brands.

    My list of issues at the time I started this sounds like many of the rest of you: Hiatal hernia, GERD, I.B.S. on top of it (subsided to almost never after I got rid of the upper-end pain – maybe unique, but think the stress of Acid Reflux contributed heavily to IBS symptoms).

    I have been desperately searching for a cure to this terrible condition LPR (Laryngopharyngeal Reflux).

    This year has been horrible! It seems that every month or every two weeks I go through this relentless coughing, choking to the point of vomiting episodes. It has interfered with my socializing because I can’t carry on a decent conversation without the coughing. And being invited to dinner is awful because with every bite, there is the cough.

    It is crazy!! Sleeping through the night just does not happen due to the coughing. I was diagnosed with LPR and put on Prilosec OTC which I have been taking for several months now.

    It seemed to work for a while and then I got off. When I started back this time, I find that it is not working as well and will probably need to increase the dosage which I don’t want to do in light of the new findings on these types of meds.

    I ran across the this site and immediately ran to the Nutrition Center for Braggs Apple Cider. I began taking it as soon as I got back in my car!!!

    I spent 4 years on Ranitidine and then the last 9 or so on Prilosec.

    These controlled my symptoms well but after reading recently about links between Prisolec / Omeprazole and osteoporosis I decided to search for a natural cure.

    Several months ago I developed extreme pain, nausea, and other symptoms.

    First it seemed like gastritis, then maybe an ulcer. Finally, I had an upper-GI x-ray and was diagnosed with hiatal hernia and reflux.

    My doc recommended 1 TBL of apple cider vinegar (I use Bragg’s) before each meal and vegan digestive enzymes (I’m vegan).

      Hi Everyone,

      I’ve been in a battle with carbs for quite a while now. I will get on Atkins for a few months and then get off because of one thing or another then back on Atkins and off. It’s been a struggle to say the least, but I do like Atkins as I lost weight super fast.

      Okay well let me get back on track. I’ve noticed this twice now. Whenever I stop Atkins and eat carbs again I develop a really bad sore throat the next day or so after. It almost feels like my tonsils are on fire. It will last for a day or two and then everything is fine. It’s always the morning after I quit Atkins. Like I quit Monday. Ate normal Tuesday and today my throat is sore.

      Any ideas what could be causing this. Also, I’ve noticed that I don’t seem to be losing as much weight anymore on Atkins. I have always been someone who loses weight super fast on Induction.

      Well lately I’m noticing I am baring losing anything at all. Is it possible that going on and off of Atkins all the time is making it harder for me to lose weight with Atkins. I doubt it, but just thought I would pose the question to my fellow Atkin friends.

      I’m getting back on the horse tomorrow. I still eat basically the exact same way I have done in the past and got great weight loss, but now it’s like maybe one pound every 1 and I’m on Induction. It’s just odd.
