He’s known for being a bit of a recluse, but actor Daniel Day-Lewis broke his habit for a stroll around Manhattan with his teenage son this week. Cutting a dashing figure in a smart coat and dark denim jeans, the 55 year old was nevertheless showing signs of hair loss around his temples.

The Lincoln star didn’t appear to be experiencing a thinning of his hair, which remains thick even as his once striking black locks have since faded to salt and pepper grey. However, even though Day-Lewis wears his hair reasonably long, a receding hairline was still clearly visible.

There Will Be Hair Loss

Now, it’s certainly possible that Day-Lewis has attempted, and to a certain degree successfully treated, his hair loss. The first of two medications proven for hair loss, Propecia, is great at treating overall thinning of a man’s scalp hair. Propecia works by blocking DHT, a powerful androgen that causes male pattern hair loss by causing scalp follicles to shrink and produce thin, weak hair in place of previously healthy growth.

If Day-Lewis is indeed using Propecia, which is taken as a tablet, he could have it to thank for stopping his hair thinning, but Propecia alone is not the best way to treat a receding hairline. Of course, Day-Lewis may find that patches where his hair used to grow have ceased to produce hair at all, and when these areas become shiny and bald hair cannot be regrown, however a hair loss treatment programme can still ensure that hair is grown back where possible, and hair loss is halted to prevent further damage to the follicles.
