Having More Than One Type of Hair Loss

woman hair loss confusedThere are many possible reasons behind hair loss, especially for women, and whilst 95% of men with hair loss are experiencing pattern (genetic) hair loss, they too can experience hair loss due to other causes. It’s also true that men and women can both suffer from more than one type of hair loss condition at the same time.

The most common form of hair loss is androgenic alopecia, which occurs when an inherited predisposition to DHT sensitivity is expressed. DHT is a powerful androgen hormone that causes follicular miniaturisation atop the scalp, leading to thinner, weaker hairs being produced that appear like wispy, baby hair and that break easily.

Mixing It Up

Androgenic alopecia, also known as female, or male pattern hair loss, may be the most common of type of excess shedding that we see at the clinic, but it is certainly not the only form that hair loss can take. Another potential diagnosis is alopecia areata, where patchy hair loss develops due to an auto-immune disease.

Traction alopecia, which is the result of wearing hair in tight braids or using extensions or weaves, can also be a diagnosis, as can diffuse thinning, which is often the result of a nutrient deficiency or thyroid problem.

Because these causes of hair loss all stem from different root problems or tendencies, it’s possible to experience several types of hair loss at once, and a hair loss specialist would be able to diagnose what exactly is causing your hair loss, and therefore how it should be treated.

For instance, a women experiencing pattern hair loss along with diffuse thinning might need a blood test to determine the cause of her shedding, which could then be addressed. Whilst this is being done, she might also need to begin treatment for female pattern hair loss, and a hair loss treatment programme that contains minoxidil along with a variety of hair growth boosters would ensure that the hair loss was treated in the most efficient way possible.

Treating Simultaneously

It is also possible to experience traction alopecia at the same time as stress-induced telogen effluvium, for example. It’s also worth remembering that whereas genetics is by far the most common cause of hair loss in men, women are more likely to experience hair loss due to certain lifestyle factors that are unique to the female sex, such as ceasing to take birth control pills, having an abortion, etc.

So, treating two (or more) types of hair loss at once is certainly possible, providing that you are using hair loss products compiled for you by an experienced hair loss specialist. It’s important to attend a consultation not only to receive a correct diagnosis, but also to ascertain exactly what strength medication is best for your individual case.

Whilst Propecia (a DHT blocker used to treat pattern hair loss) comes in a standard daily dosage, minoxidil, the second and only other medication to be licensed by the MHRA and approved by the FDA, is dose dependent. Minoxidil is available in various strength liquid solutions and two high strength minoxidil creams for particularly stubborn areas of hair loss.

All the above mentioned hair loss conditions can be treated with a tailored hair loss treatment programme, and depending on your individual case, hair loss can be cleared up for good or require a treatment programme to maintain the results.
