Hyperhidrosis Center of Excellence in Beverly Hills Now Offers Pain …

Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) March 13, 2013

A high-tech drug delivery device, called the jet injection, reduces the discomfort of Botox treatment for patients at the Hyperhidrosis Center of Excellence, an extension of La Peer Health Systems. Botox is an FDA approved therapy for hyperhidrosis, a condition characterized by excessive and unpredictable sweating that affects an estimated 2-3% of the population.

Botox is more often used to treat excessive sweating of the hands (palmar hyperhidrosis), but may also be used to treat hyperhidrosis of the armpits (axillary) and feet (plantar). Traditional methods of Botox injection can be painful to some patients, despite several pain-management measures.

The jet injection device uses a controlled, high-speed stream of fluid to deliver a drug through the surface of the skin, explained Dr. Ali Mahtabifard, director of the Hyperhidrosis Center of Excellence. This more advanced, painless method will help many people suffering from hyperhidrosis who might have been deterred from receiving Botox injections.

According to Dr. Mahtabifard, Botox is an excellent option for patients with mild hyperhidrosis symptoms who wish to try a conservative therapy before surgery. The jet injection device can be used to either deliver the Botox through the skin directly, or to deliver a local anesthetic to the skin to minimize patient discomfort during Botox injections.

Hyperhidrosis is thought to be the result of an overactive sympathetic nervous system, the group of nerves responsible for regulating the body’s response to stressful stimuli, including sweating. While several alternative therapies for hyperhidrosis exist, Botox injections often provide the most consistent and prolonged sweat reduction.

Patients who undergo Botox treatment for hyperhidrosis can expect clear blocking of sweat secretion in the treated glands for approximately 6 months, after which the procedure must be repeated. Side effects are minimal, and may include temporary redness or tenderness at the injection site for several days after treatment.

After a Botox procedure, it is important to take proper care of the skin around the injection site by avoiding excess heat and UV exposure. These protective measures can help to reduce irritation and other side effects.

In the event that Botox does not provide adequate relief from sweating, more effective options are available. Dr. Mahtabifard, an expert in the surgical care of hyperhidrosis, routinely performs a minimally invasive surgery called thoracoscopic sympathectomy. This outpatient procedure is the most effective long-term solution in most cases of hyperhidrosis.

The Hyperhidrosis Center of Excellence is directed by Ali Mahtabifard, MD, a Harvard-trained thoracic surgeon board-certified in general and cardiothoracic surgery. Dr. Mahtabifard is an expert in minimally invasive thoracic surgery and has had extensive training in the comprehensive management and advanced surgical care of hyperhidrosis.
