Eczema | Eczema and Allergies | Eczema in Children and Babies

eczema-and-allergiesIf your child is a sufferer of eczema, there is a chance they may well suffer from other allergies.

While most types of eczema are not allergies, sufferers may experience flare ups when exposed to certain allergens.

What is the connection between Eczema and Allergies?

If you yourself experienced eczema as a youngster or currently have seasonal allergies/ asthma and your child is an eczema sufferer, it is probably no coincidence.

Studies show that if one or both parents suffer from eczema, asthma or seasonal allergies then their child is at a significantly increased risk of developing eczema. This also means that these eczema-suffering children are more likely to develop seasonal allergies or asthma.

In fact, as much as 35% of adults that had eczema as child will go on to develop seasonal allergies or asthma as an adult!

Eczema and Allergies have another genetic link. Researchers have found that many eczema sufferers actually inherit a lack of a protein that protects the skin from germs and bacteria called Filaggrin. Without Filaggrin the skin is vulnerable to irritants and allergens which can causes allergic reactions and, therefore, eczema.

When your child is exposed to an allergen their body releases histamines, which can then go on to cause a reaction. This reaction could include irritation, inflammation, hives or sneezing or, indeed, eczema!

What allergies could be triggering my child’s eczema?

An allergic reaction is provoked when your child’s body overreacts to an ‘allergen’ that generally should not cause any harm.

Common allergens include:
– Food
– Dust Mites
– Pollen
– Animals
– Dust
– Mould
– Deodorants and other aerosols
– Nickel
– Perfumes
– Detergents
– Scented Soaps
– Plants
– Certain medications

Food allergies is probably the main culprit of eczema flare ups but is thought to provoke a more severe reaction in children than adults, so be careful!

How to treat Eczema and Allergies?

Of course, keeping your child away from skin irritants and allergens is ideal but, unfortunately, not always possible.

The best thing you can possibly do is try to keep eczema symptoms under control. This means an effective, natural emollient should be applied on a daily basis to calm symptoms.

The Syrinx Za Emollient is a natural chemical-free emollient containing Zander and Argan Oil, ingredients that are able to work together to draw impurities from the skin and relieve the symptoms of eczema. It uses the ancient healing powers of Sapropel and Argan to soothe and rehydrate the skin, whilst removing any toxins. It is a gentle emollient for the face, ears, neck and other sensitive areas, and ideal for sensitive, immature skin.
