Actor Jude Law was photographed last night leaving the charity fundraising gala A Curious Night at the Theatre, in aid of The National Autistic Society and Ambitious about Autism. The famous actor had taken part in a live stage performance of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, and left the theatre with his hair loss on full display.

Dressed in a pale grey suit, the award winning actor looked his usual dapper self, though his grubby trainers seemed to indicate he was a little off-duty. The 40 year old was still content to pose whilst surrounded by the play’s stars, including, Luke Treadaway, along with Coldplay’s Chris Martin and other well known attendees.

The Curious Hairline Incident

He used to be one half of TV’s golden couple alongside Anthea Turner, however following an affair with a blonde socialite, Grant Bovey has been kicked out of his marital home. The ex-Blue Peter presenter allegedly discovered that Bovey was having an affair with the same woman with whom he has been photographed holidaying with in the South of France.

Based on the fact that his new partner is under half his age, Bovey, 53, will be keen to keep himself looking as young as possible. However, when comparing recent pictures of the failed property tycoon with ones from just a few years ago, a receding hairline is clearly visible.

The likely explanation for Bovey’s hair loss is male pattern hair loss, which affects 95% of men with noticeable shedding. Question: Will I be able to undergo a hair transplant treatment when I am 17 or 18? My receding hairline is causing me to feel depressed.

Answer: A receding hairline is an early indication of male pattern hair loss, which requires treatment to halt the hair loss and regrow hair. However, I would not recommend that someone as young as you has a hair transplant operation. Should you have a hair transplant done, your hair line will still continue to recede behind the implants. This will leave a gap that you can potentially fill in with another procedure after a number of years. The biggest drawback is the number of times you will require further hair transplants. The average is three or four procedures in a lifetime, if you have enough hair on the donor area. Once you have had a surgical procedure, there is no going back. You will be obliged to preserve the rest of your hair since it will look odd if you end up losing hair around your implants.

For this reason, I suggest that you start a treatment programme to help stabilise your receding hairline and to prevent hair loss on the rest of the affected area. A good transplant surgeon would recommend you try a medical approach to treating your hair loss for a minimum of six months before a transplant anyway, purely because this is often enough by itself to treat your hair loss effectively. If you’re 16 or over, you can use minoxidil, a medication for hair loss that has been approved by the UK’s medical regulatory body, and when you reach the age of 18, you can also use Propecia, the second and only other proven medication for hair loss.

Hollywood actor and director Tom Hanks, who has appeared in such classics as Forrest Gump and Sleepless in Seattle, appeared at the Tony awards this week, sporting a new darker hairstyle and a moustache. However, his new dark locks drew attention to his hairline, which seems to be receding in the classic ‘M’ shape.

The 56 year old, who was nominated in the Best Actor category for his role as tabloid columnist Mike McAlary in Norah Ephron’s ‘Lucky Guy,’ went home empty handed, but did present an award. The actor appeared in good shape, but with his hair combed back, his receding hairline was in full view.

Catch Hair If You Can

Once patches of the scalp have become completely shiny and bald there is no way for hair to be regrown. You’re probably used to hearing about ‘widow’s peaks’ when people discuss frontal baldness, which is a phrase used to describe the V pattern in the centre of the forehead. This V shape can occur in people who are not experiencing hair loss as their natural hair line, but the term is also used to describe a receding hairline that has moved back at the sides.

Superstitious Minds

In the past the term widow’s peak came into use when it was noted that the hairline shape was suggestive of a widow’s hood (traditionally worn as part of a mourning outfit as early as the 1500′s), and the possession of a widow’s peak was even rather superstitiously thought to foreshadow early widowhood for women.

These days, the term is used for both men and women to describe the hairline, and men with notable receding hairlines in this shape include Jude Law, Wayne Rooney and John Travolta. However, it’s also true that one side of the hairline can recede noticeably faster than the other, leaving an uneven pattern of hair loss at the front of the head.
