Is The Bleeding Tsarnaev Picture Really Better Than The Tsarnaev …

What this captures is rarely simple.

The World’s Stupidest Controversy© (at least since the Muslim community center near the World Trade Center took over the summer headlines) continues apace. It’s becoming increasingly clear that the whole “controversy” over the Rolling Stone cover is mostly being drummed by up right wing nuts who want to increase suspicion that the “liberal media” secretly loves terrorists, though there have been a handful of narcissistic liberals who have joined in, because they want a piece of the “pretending you hate murder the mostest” contest to gain a gold star in murder-hating. (American politics is largely governed by the logic of the playground.) To add more fuel to the fire, Sgt. Sean Murphy, who photographed Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s capture, has released his photos against the Boston P.D.’s will, in an attempt to show the “real” Tsarnaev. Murphy explains that his photography doesn’t deal in nuance or complexity, and it certainly doesn’t ask the viewer to think about complex issues like how appearances can be deceiving. No, Murphy demands photography be an art where the bad guys twirl mustaches and wear black hats, and the good guys have strong chins and white hats.

Photography is very simple, it’s very basic. It brings us back to the cave. An image like this on the cover of Rolling Stone, we see it instantly as being wrong. What Rolling Stone did was wrong. This guy is evil. This is the real Boston bomber. Not someone fluffed and buffed for the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

It’s worth remembering that the RS picture is not a “fluffed and buffed” professional shot at all, but a selfie that Tsarnaev took himself, perfectly fitting with the story’s theme about the gulf between how Tsarnaev presented himself to the world and who he apparently really is.

Anyway, we get the point. Murphy eschews subtlety and thinks an image should be simplistic, childish (or caveman-ish), with its emotions blunt and in your face. No thought allowed. You should know exactly how to feel just by looking at it, no matter what it is, and it certainly shouldn’t cause you to feel any need for self-reflection or to ask yourself why this image makes you feel the way you do. Presumably, this means no context, cause context starts to introduce the complications that Murphy claims to so hate.

So what did Murphy offer as a context-free image that makes it crystal clear that the bad guy is a bad guy that you should hate, even if you have no idea who he is? I’d imagine a picture of the bad guy posing by some guns and trying to look badass, which is what I think of when I think of simple, blunt images that you can understand immediately without context. Something like this:

But that’s not what he offered. He offered this:

Interesting: An image of a bloody, wounded person in a submissive pose. Okay. What about this?

I will say that Murphy, despite clearly knowing nothing about the art of photography, has a native sense of how to shoot good photos. But he’s lost the plot if he thinks these photos require any less context and interpretation than the Rolling Stone cover. Just taken without context, the RS cover is a picture of a handsome kid taking a selfie. Without context, these two photos are pictures of a wounded, exhausted kid turning himself over to some unknown people who are apprehending him. If you didn’t know who this was, it would be just as easy to believe that the person in it is a hostage in a war as a terrorist who has finally been caught by the cops. You need the context to be able to know how to feel.

In fact, I could easily argue that images of people being hurt and vulnerable are far more likely to cause people to feel pangs of sympathy, even if they know better, than images of the bad guy looking handsome, which tends to only creep people out. (Which was the point.) For instance, take one of my very favorite TV shows, Game of Thrones. One well they regularly go to in order to make you feel more sympathy for a character is to show that person hurt and exhausted.

Example #1:

Jamie Lannister, would-be child killer whose incestuous relations with his sister laid the ground work for a murderous war over a throne that wouldn’t be contested if he had kept his hands off Sis. Up until season three, Jaime is played as a pretty much black hat evil villain (though a handsome one, so I guess that confuses the idiots who are up in arms about the RS cover), the kind you hiss and boo when he’s onscreen. And then he loses his hand and is filmed as broken, pathetic, wounded, and lost, opening up viewer sympathies so arguments about Jamie’s good side can be introduced.

Example #2:

Prior to this, Theon was also a black hat villain, who turned his back on his friends and killed two innocent little boys to scare a conquered people into submission. But now he’s been tortured and beaten into submission, inviting enough sympathy from the viewer that we cheer upon hearing that his sister is rallying the troops to come save him.

Example #3:

Obviously, Ned Stark is mostly a white hat character, but I include this photo of him in a similar pose of submission to make this point: Murphy claims that it’s obvious that the guy with his head down and the exhausted look on his face who is submitting to authority is a villain, something that we should all know upon looking at him. And that such an image would in no way cause people to glamorize him, etc. So why do filmmakers use this pose so often to make characters seem heroic?

Counter-theory: While the RS cover may give a small amount of fuel to the weird online cult of Jahar fangirls, who are, in the end, childish and powerless, this image of Tsarnaev looking broken and wounded could very well be used by Islamic terrorist propagandists as inspiration. This photo could become a rallying point for the very fundamentalist terrorist websites and publications that fueled the Tsarnaev’s ideological spiral that led to violence. In fact, I would be very surprised if it did not.

Not that I think that justifies censoring it. I’m glad Murphy released these photos, because it is important to see that the bad guy is not a mustache-twirling villain, but that bad guys are human, and we are only hurting ourselves if we pretend otherwise. It’s just telling that a picture that has a lot more potential to be used to enrage and inspire Islamic terrorists is being applauded by the right, when one that really can’t be used for that is being turned into a controversy. That would be because Murphy’s photo doesn’t fit into the “evil liberal media loves terrorist” narrative—and the narrative, not the facts, is all that the conservatives who are the bulk of the fauxtroversy care about.

Krishnamacharya's Ashtanga Vinyasa Krama Yoga at Home: The …

It was all going so well, stringing a few half Primary’s together, started to think that the Kidney stone from the left kidney might be of a different kind, the smoother pebbly variety, smaller too perhaps and that it was on it’s way out relatively painlessly.

No such luck, they (probably only male doctors) compare kidney stones to giving birth….it smarts a bit.
Thankfully I still had the medication from last year and the out of hours GP on NHS Direct gave me the all clear to start taking them, it’s taken the edge off. Supposedly the naproxen will kick in after a day or two and I should be able to walk around again and get back to work…and practice, last time practice seemed to help.

The first link is to the green Smoothie Kidney stone pos from last year, the second from a week later when it finally came out, with a picture of the little bugger.

    Kidney Stone Practice

    Tuesday, 15 May 2012
Yoga, you let me down…or did you?

So no practice and Cold, snotty nose and sore throat, is throwing off the pranayma but I have been doing some chanting along with Manjus DVD and plan on practicing some of Gregor’s pratyahara and meditation techniques….as well as listening to some cricket.

Thank you to Łukasz Przywóski of  www.ashtangayoga.pl for sending me this, seems I have pitta stones

Might hurt like hell but at least it’s on the way out, hopefully by the end of the week, a Crystal for my 50th birthday. M. said she’d leave me if I ever got into crystals, chakras are one thing but a wife has to draw the line somewhere.  That will still leave two or three weeks to cobble together a half decent primary for Manju.

The way back – 1 Six weeks off regular practice…Manju looming ever larger

    Here we go…: Updates from 38 weeks and 4 days doctor's …

*Disclaimer: Pictures of a kidney stone and stretch marks further down.  Feel free to skip this post!  :)

I had my last doctor’s appointment before Maggie’s arrival this morning.

    Here are the updates:

Blood pressure: 120/72 – clearly, I am not suffering from gestational hypertension this time around.  Turns out…it doesn’t matter so much in regards to the end of this pregnancy.

Weight gain: nothing.  I’m stuck at the same 1/2 lb less that I was at last week.  This leaves me at a total weight gain of about 17 lbs (8 lbs less than I gained with Nora).

Maggie’s heart rate, fundal height, and blood glucose: all good.  Yay!

As I posted after the last appointment, the doctor and I “discussed” induction at 39 weeks (meaning he scared the fool out of me about having a huge baby who might get stuck on the way out…to devastating consequences, and then told me I was having an induction this Thursday).

Want to know how “prepared” my body was when I was induced with Nora at 38 weeks?

    2 cm dilated; 50% effaced.

Want to know how “prepared” my body is for induction with Maggie this Thursday at 39 weeks?

    0 cm dilated; 50% effaced.

So all of those “practice” contractions…and all of that pressure…and all of that walking 2-4 miles per day since May 3…and all of that spicy food and pineapple over the last few days…..

Worthless.  From what I have read, I am a terrible candidate for a “successful” induction.

To make matters worse, of the five doctors in the practice that I go to, I love one of them, like three of them, and hate hate hate the last one.

Wanna guess who the doctor on call for Thursday is?

Yep.  The doctor I cannot stand.

And as if all of this wasn’t enough for a very pregnant woman to be facing right now….after waking up with excruciating back pain Saturday evening (pain that I could barely breathe through), I passed a rather large kidney stone Saturday morning at 3:30 am, and I’ve been passing smaller ones on and off ever since.

Wanna see the stone?  I actually caught this one.

    You know you do.

When I mentioned them to the doctor, they just told me that they wouldn’t impact labor, and that I would probably want to see a urologist some time after Maggie was born.  Fabulous.  Just fabulous.

So, here is where all of that leaves us:
    – I have to go in Wednesday night for the induction, rather than Thursday morning.
    – I am really frustrated that my body is not at all ready.
    – I am really hoping there aren’t more big stones in my kidneys right now.  I’m actually even more frustrated that this stone came from my left kidney…whereas all previous stones have come from my right kidney.  This means my left kidney is now up to no good.
    – I’m trying to finish some stuff up at work today, as I don’t plan on coming in tomorrow, and I don’t know what time I’ll have to head to the hospital on Wednesday.

Other random updates (since I skipped the 38 week post last Thursday):
    – Maggie is still very active.  She is head down (like she has been since at least 20 weeks), but she is not engaged like Nora was beginning at 34 weeks.
    – I’ve had almost no swelling, and I can still wear my wedding rings.  :)
    – Cravings – nothing.  Nothing actually sounds good right now.
    – Mood – apprehensive about induction again (even more so now that I know my body isn’t ready), but trying to keep things as normal as possible for Nora’s sake.
    – Stretch marks?  UGH.  None with Nora.  Maggie is making up for it.  (and yes, cocoa butter has been applied, along with various other products.  Nothing works.  They itch, and they hurt…and they are UGLY).

On a lighter note, people like to marvel that I don’t look pregnant from behind….what do you guys think?  :)

    Shocking, right?  :)

I’ll update sometime after Maggie’s arrival.  Here we go…..

Dlisted | Beyonce Wants You To Know Who The True Queen Of …

That high-pitched scream that’s peeling layers of skin off of your ear canals is coming from Suri Cruise as she puts on her sturdiest stomping heels to destroy her cheap, pedestrian Disney princess tiara. The staff at Cartier better brace themselves, because Suri is going to jump through their glass doors and throw her Black AMEX at them as she demands to see their most expensive crown. She doesn’t want anything from the showroom either. She wants to see some shit from the vault! Blame Beyonce.

Beyonce kept it demure as always by posting a few “personal” pictures of her highness Blue Ivy Carter on her official Tumblr. Beyonce posted a picture of BIC wearing a crown made of North West’s crystallized tears, Goopy Paltrow’s kidney stones, the white fur from a missing red panda, and a Chivas Regal velvet bag. And that’s just BIC’s daytime crown! Beyonce also posted a picture of BIC’s House of Dereon couture dress (made from the moth balls that Basement Baby coughs up) and a picture of her custom-made ballerina heels. That picture of BIC’s heels is a direct threat to Suri Cruise. That’s BIC’s not-so-subtle way of telling Suri that she better stand back because the real high heel-wearing baby queen is coming through.

And yes, I’m sure BIC got photo approval. BIC’s assistants show her a picture and if she spits up, that means she hates it and her assistants immediately throw it into the fire. They throw themselves into the fire too for wasting the baby queen’s precious time.

Kidney Back Pain – Causes, Symptoms … – Diseases Pictures

Kidney back pain or simply called as kidney pain is difficult to diagnose since a pain on your back can be due to several reasons. All the time kidneys are not involved in causing pain. Kidneys are located high on your back placed just below the lower ribs. Only through other signs you can confirm that pain is due to kidney problem. A pair of kidneys lies just below the diaphragm at the far end of the abdomen and any abnormality in the kidney will cause dull kidney pain.

Kidney pain is marked by dull (often one sided) pain on your lower back along with or without fever and urinary symptoms. Any infection on your kidneys (pyelonephritis) can cause kidney back pain. When there are stones in the kidney and it moves it can hurt you badly giving sharp pain. You can feel sharp staggering pain when the kidney stone travels to bladder. Such pain due to the movement of kidney stones is called colic.

    Causes :

There are many reasons for getting kidney back pain. Kidney stone is formed due to building of excess of uric acid and calcium on the bladder. The size of the stones can be smaller or larger and it causes intense pain in the back during mornings.

Pyelonephritis also called as kidney infection can cause severe back pain. This is caused by bacteria and some amount of urine is sent into the ureter through back pressure. Very often individuals with kidney stone will get kidney infection. The pain will be sharp and severe on your back to identify this problem.

Urinary tract infection commonly called UTI can cause kidney back pain. It is caused due to gram negative bacteria and can be identified by the presence of blood in the urine. Irritation while passing urine and passing only few drops of urine are important symptoms of UTI. When there is hemorrhage or bleeding in your kidney it can hurt you very well. A blood clot formed on the arteries of the kidney is called Ischemia or arteriosclerosis and it can cause intense pain.

Swelling of kidney or any inflammation or presence of fluid (hydronephrosis) can cause intense pain. Presence of tumor, kidney cancer, infection, kidney disease, horseshoe kidney, cyst in the kidney, blood clots in the veins of kidney and urinary tract infection are some of the causes of kidney pain.

Actually back pain is caused by many factors apart from kidney. Mild to severe form of back pain can occur due to spinal fracture, osteoporosis, lumbar disc herniation and bone fracture. Even stress and emotion can cause back pain. Pregnancy is one of the main reasons for low back pain. Gradual block in the normal urine flow can also cause kidney pain.

    Symptoms :

You need to check for other symptoms before concluding that your back pain is due to kidney pain. People may have urinary disorder, nausea, vomiting, low grade fever, loss of appetite, swelling in extremities (hands and legs), and pain in the groin area if the reason is kidney back pain.

Often, the movement of kidney stones causes intense back pain. Stones are not formed all on a sudden. Certain chemicals like calcium, uric acid builds up in excess in the kidneys unable to be washed out. Further they travel into the bladder forming small sized stones. These stones will get blocked in the tiny tube of ureter (through which urine is flushed out) thus preventing the normal flow of urine. This causes inflammation of the kidney and pain.

    Diagnoses :

Your doctor will look for other symptoms apart from back pain. He would request for abdomen X-ray, CT scan or MRI scan of the abdomen for detecting kidney stone.

    Treatment :

Treatment of kidney pain varies with respect to the causative factor. Antibiotics are given for treating infection on the kidney. Medications are prescribed to dissolve kidney stones. Hence your doctor will find the root cause of back pain before starting any mode of treatment. Mild form of back pain can be managed by giving warm compression massage at home.

Kidney stones are predominantly formed due to dehydration. You need to drink plenty of water for preventing kidney stones. Your doctor may give diuretics to flush out excess of uric acid from the stones. Most of the small sized stones can be removed by medications. Only large sized stone needs to be operated and removed. Lithotripsy is done for sending shock waves for crushing the stone inside which is eventually flushed out through urine.

Antibiotics like sulfamethoxazole, quinolones, levoflaxacin and penicillin are prescribed for treating kidney infection. You can drink cranberry juice available in supermarkets to prevent getting stones in your kidney. Kidney back pain due to cancer is treated through surgery, immunotherapy, and cryoablation or radiofrequency ablation methods.

For polycystic kidney disease, drinking plenty of fluids can help to get relief from symptoms. Further your doctor would recommend low sodium diet along with drugs for controlling blood pressure. In rare cases, surgery is done for removing the cysts from the kidney.

    Prevention :

Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water each day. You can also have fresh fruit juices of watermelons, grapes and cucumber for flushing kidney stones. Do not take excess of calcium without consulting your doctor since it can lead to kidney stone formation. Restrict the amount of fish and meat to prevent getting uric acid stones. Whenever you feel like urinating you should not wait or suppress the urge, since it can lead to uric acid formation in the kidneys. You can prevent most of the urinary tract infection by drinking plenty of water.

Kidney Stones Dissolving Treatment with Natural Dr. Allen's Device …

The risk of high blood pressure, diabetes and dialysis after the kidney stones treatment with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) and kidney surgery is significant, especially when the kidney stones disease is recurrent. This is why urologists are begining to pay attention to the Thermobalancing therapy that dissolves renal calculi naturally, states Fine Treatment.

The article, ‘Treatment of chronic diseases through Dr. Allen’s Device: An interview with Professor Ivan G. Aghajanyan’ in Panorama.am, dated June 24, 2013, discusses the effectiveness of the Thermobalancing therapy with regards to urological problems. “We have already started testing the efficacy of Dr. Allen’s device on 10 of our patients. I should note I’m using it myself. So in 3-6 months, we’ll conduct another examination, review the progress of the treatment, and then repeat the examination again later on,” states a leading urologist, Chief of Urology Department at the Armenian National Institute of Health, Professor Ivan Aghajanyan.

According to WebMD, complications of ESWL include pain caused by the passage of stone fragments; blocked urine flow as a result of stone fragments becoming stuck in the urinary tract; the fragments may then need to be removed with a ureteroscope, urinary tract infection, bleeding around the outside of the kidney. Furthermore, the conclusion of the researches from the Mayo Clinic is: “At 19 years of follow-up SWL for renal and proximal ureteral stones was associated with the development of hypertension and diabetes mellitus.”

A piece of research on ‘Kidney stones and kidney function loss: a cohort study’ in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), of 30 August 2012, states that kidney stones can double the risk of dialysis or kidney transplant later in life for people who have had them, and it is certainly connected with the conventional treatments patients with kidney stones have received.

Contrary to ESWL, the Thermobalancing therapy enabled by Dr. Allen’s Device for Kidney Care eases the symptoms of kidney stones first, gradually dissolving kidney stones over time. Dr. Allen’s Device places natural thermo-elements to the back just above the waistline covering both kidneys. It improves blood circulation at the capillary level, letting the blood to cleanse kidneys from the stones naturally.

“People should do whatever they can to avoid serious complications from conventional kidney stones treatments, including high blood pressure and diabetes,” says Dr. Simon Allen. “I’m pleased that Dr. Allen’s therapeutic device for kidney stones has attracted attention of leading urologists who are now willing to recommend it to their patients.”

How Ryan Tedder & A Kidney Stone Inspired Parachute's New …

“Hearts Go Crazy,” the lead single off Parachute‘s third album, Overnight, came about in an altered state. And only after some prodding did frontman Will Anderson share the graphic tale behind the song.

“I was diagnosed with a kidney stone and through the pain I was delirious on some sort of drug, pain medication,” he told Radio.com. “My tour manager said I was singing that song through my stupor and pain so I knew at that point that was going to be the single. I called our manager the next day and said this was going to be our single and that was that.”

Anderson added that “Hearts Go Crazy” was also selected as the first single because it was so versatile, with the band recording several versions of the song so it could translate to any genre.

“We had the acoustic version, we had the rock version, we had a pop version, we even had a house/dubstep version,” he said. “It was a very nice vehicle to get our sound across all these different spectrums. It’s definitely different from what we’ve done but the song itself is overall us.” Listen to the acoustic version below.
