Skin tags are benign and non cancerous small tumors of the skin which cause no symptoms. They look like a small piece of soft, hanging flesh and generally occur in skin creases or folds. They are commonly found on the eyelids, neck, upper chest, groin, under the breasts and the armpits. They are caused by constant rubbing or scratching of the skin either by clothing or shaving or by jewelry. The skin tags contain fat cells, nerve cells, fibers and ducts at the core which are covered by a layer of epidermis.
Initially they are skin colored or brownish flat and small bumps and are smooth in appearance. Later they become big and can range from one centimeter in diameter to five centimeters and are raised from the surface of the skin and hang on fleshy stalks or peduncles. Skin tags are very common in middle aged people and are said to be caused by bunches of collagen and blood vessels which get trapped inside thick bits of skin. Obesity and heredity can also cause skin tags. Sometimes use of steroids causes collagen and fibers in the skin to bond and form skin tags.
Home Remedies For Skin Tags
Apple Cider Vinegar
Though tags do not cause any symptoms, they can be irritating and itch at times. Moreover they look ugly and unsightly. Dip a cotton ball into some raw apple cider vinegar and place it on the tag.
Tape the ball over the tag with some first aid adhesive tape. Change the cotton ball every four hours. After a week, the tag will shrink and fall off altogether.
Tea Tree Oil
Put seven drops of tea tree oil in a small bowl. Add five drops of fresh lemon juice to it and five drops of organic apple cider vinegar to it.
Mix the ingredients well and dip a cotton ball into this mixture. Place the cotton ball on the tag and tape it in place with some adhesive plaster. Repeat this procedure twice daily. Very soon the skin tag will shrivel and fall off.
Take some castor oil and mix enough baking soda with it to from a thick paste. Add a few drops of citrus oil to improve the smell of the paste. Coat the tag with this paste and cover it with a band aid.
Apply a fresh coat after every five hours and change the band aid. Apply the paste regularly for three or four weeks until the tag disappears completely.
Lemon juice is very effective in getting rid of the skin tags as it contains large amounts of citric acid which helps in decomposing the nerve cells, fat cells and collagen present in the tag and makes it shrivel and fall off. Apply the juice of fresh lemons directly on the tag three or four times daily till the tag vanishes.
Take a small piece of banana peel and place the inside part of it on the tag. Tape it on the area with a first aid adhesive tape. Keep changing the peel every few hours and keep it overnight. Regular use will cause the tag to fall off.
