The famously irreverent BBC music quiz Never Mind The Buzzcocks is know for hosting a bevy of stars from the worlds of music and comedy, and last night was no exception with acclaimed comic Rufus Hound amongst the panelists. Despite wearing a new longer hairstyle than he usually sports, Rufus appeared to be showing signs of hair loss.

Hound’s receding hairline is a classic example of male pattern hair loss. Whilst growing his hair longer has made the recession less noticeable, the thin areas at his temples will only get more pronounced unless he decides to treat his condition.

Happily, medical treatment for this genetic form of hair loss can be, and in the majority of cases is, very successful. Firstly, the DHT blocker Propecia is used to halt the damage of DHT and give hair follicles the chance to recover from the miniaturisation that this androgen causes.

Providing that hair has not ceased to grow in the area completely (wispy ‘baby’ hair is fine) there’s every chance that follicles can recover.

Often, though, Propecia is not enough by itself to regrow a receding hairline to its full potential. This is where minoxidil comes in handy. As the only other medication proven for hair loss (Propecia and minoxidil are the only hair loss medications passed for use by the UK and US medical regulatory bodies) minoxidil appears to stimulate new growth in hair follicles.

Whilst the exact science behind why minoxidil is so effective is still a subject of scientific debate, its effectiveness is widely acknowledged, just take a look at our hair loss success stories for an idea of the results you can expect and the time frame you can expect them in.
