Scalp Psoriasis

One of the most common forms of psoriasis is ‘Scalp Psoriasis’. In fact, around 50% of sufferers of psoriasis have it on their scalp. For many people, having this condition can change their life. After all, you can cover up other locations where psoriasis has broken out, but you cannot cover up your scalp easily. In addition to that, Psoriasis scalp treatment isn’t easy to carry out, mainly because the scalp is incredibly difficult to reach, and medications that work on other parts of the body often do not work around this region. In this article let’s take a little look at a couple of the treatments which are available for scalp psoriasis.

Tar Products as Treatment for Scalp Psoriasis

One of the most common forms of scalp psoriasis treatment are tar products. In addition to the tar, these products often include salicylic acid. This comes in a number of different forms from shampoos to ointments to creams. This treatment is remarkably effective, although the smell is incredibly hideous, which does put people off somewhat. If you can stomach the smell, then start with this treatment. You should be able to purchase products which contain tar over the counter. If you do not like the tar based products, then you can purchase a number of medicated shampoos which do not contain tar, but please bear in mind that these aren’t quite as effective and we strongly suggest to try natural psoriasis scalp treatment methods first.

Topical Steroids as Treatment for Scalp Psoriasis

If the scalp psoriasis is very difficult to control, then the doctor may look into the option of topical steroids. Often these are used only in a ‘worst case’ scenario, mainly because using them for long periods of time can have severe side effects. In most cases, you won’t even need to go down this route.

Treat your Scalp Psoriasis with Vitamin D

A common natural psoriasis treatment which has a boost in popularity as of late is Vitamin D, which can be found in a variety of oil based products which can be rubbed into your scalp. While not as effective as tar, they don’t smell as much, and they are incredibly easy to use. You will be applying this type of treatment at least twice a day. ‘Vitamin A’ has the same effect, although in most cases it can be purchased as a topical gel.

Ultra Violet Light

The final treatment I wish to mention is ultra violet light. You can get a healthy dosage of this from being out in the sun for long periods of time, so it is of course classed as a home remedy. However, in severe cases of scalp psoriasis, you can work with your dermatologist to go through UV light treatment. It is expensive, but it is very, very effective. However, bear in mind that if you want UV light treatment, in most cases you are going to need to shave your scalp. It therefore is often a last resort for many people.

Remember, the majority of the scalp psoriasis treatment products that you saw up above can be purchased without a prescription. In fact, in the majority of cases, I suggest that you look into dry scalp home remedies first before asking for prescription medication. However, if you believe that you are suffering from psoriasis of the scalp, or any other form of psoriasis for that matter, I suggest that you get in touch with your doctor who will be able to provide you with advice.
