Psoriasis is a skin condition, which occurs when the White Blood Cells of the body attack the skin cells. As a result, the regeneration of the skin cells happens faster than it should be happening. Red and white, flaky, big patches form on the skin, which are itchy and irritating.
The condition is widely considered non-curable, as such, and it may worsen or improve with time, depending on the climate and the weather a person is in. However, there are some medical ways to keep the itchiness under control, and to subside the skin condition, so that chances of it reappearing can be reduced.
As far as the symptoms are concerned, one should be aware and alert the moment they start seeing red patches on their skin, or when a particular area of the skin starts to become very itchy. The skin also has raised patches in pink and red, with cracks developing in it. The most common areas for Psoriasis to appear are toenails, fingernails, scalp, elbow and knees. However, other areas of the body too can face this condition, depending on person to person.
Causes
Psoriasis happens because of a variety of reasons. In some cases, it is because of hereditary reasons, while for others, it happens because of hormonal imbalances. Some people also face this problem when they consume certain foods that don’t suit their body, or when some foods contain animal fat. In some research studies, it has also been found out that stress and anxiety in a person too have a direct relation with Psoriasis, and can lad to it.
Prevention
Psoriasis is not contagious. Neither does it spread from one person to another, nor does it spread from one body part to the other. However, it is definitely an unpleasant and difficult condition to deal with. So it’s best to avoid it as much as possible. One should keep their body and skin hydrated by drinking a lot of water and moisturizing the skin on a regular basis. It is also important to keep consuming a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables to give the skin and the immunity system all the important vitamins and minerals. Needless to say, a healthy lifestyle, which is stress-free, is also important.
Treatment
There are different ways to keep Psoriasis under control – allopathic and homeopathic both. In allopathy, doctors usually prescribe medicines to keep the itchiness and the flakiness under control, while homeopathy aims at overall skin cell repair. It is suggested that one regularly applies Olive Oil and Tea Tree Oil on the affected areas, as they have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, which prevent the infection from worsening.
For infected fingernails and toenails, one can soak them in Cider Vinegar, which not only cleanses the infected parts, but also helps in soothing the burning sensation. Garlic Oil and Cashew Nut oil can be applied if the itching and pain is persistent.
Of course, it’s important to get a doctor to check the condition first, as he/ she will analyze the extent and kind of Psoriasis it is, and will recommend solutions accordingly.
