Soda Bad For Kidney Stones, But Beer and Coffee Good? – Study

colaIf you are one of those who loves everything sweet, this one’s for you. According to a research carried out in the at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, drinks that are sweetened are more likely to help develop kidney stones. The report’s findings, which got published in this year’s Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN), stated that different drinks have different effects when it comes to prevent the recurrence of kidney stones.

Today, nearly 20% of men and 10% of women suffer from the occurrence of kidney stones at least once in their life. While doctors normally prescribe increased amounts of fluid to dissolve the stones, an operation is also necessary at times.

Now, researchers indicate that taking sweetened sugary fluids might actually enhance the chance of a recurrence of kidney stones.

According to the abstract: ”Consumption of sugar-sweetened soda and punch is associated with a higher risk of stone formation, whereas consumption of coffee, tea, beer, wine, and orange juice is associated with a lower risk.”

Around 194,095 people were studied for the purpose and data from three different cohorts, including Health Professionals Follow-Up Study (HPFS), and both the Nurses’ Health Study I (NHS I) and II (NHS II). All participants had to be involved in the analysis for more than 8 years and had to fill up complete questionnaires which had details about the medical history, medication as well as their lifestyle. The findings revealed that those who drank even one sugary soda per day were at an increased risk of 23% of a kidney stone recurrence – when compared to people who had a soda only once a week.
