Medical Specialists Blog: Sweating too much? It may not be due to …

Although the weather seems to have now momentarily returned to the
‘norm’ for the UK, last week saw Britain blessed with unfamiliar
scorching-hot weather and certain areas such as Hampshire, experienced
temperatures of around 25C.

Obviously with glorious sunshine comes sweating – aka perspiration.
Sweating is basically our body’s built-in cooling system and occurs when
the temperature rises. Heat activates the sweat glands within our skin,
which then release fluids (sweat). After this evaporates, your body
will have cooled-down and a more comfortable internal temperature is
restored.

However, excessive and seemingly
unnecessary sweating – especially when it is not a particularly hot day –
can raise a red flag for certain health problems and is something that
should not be casually ignored.

Here are some of the factors that could be causing excessive sweating:

Hypoglycaemia

This is when the blood has a usually low level of sugar (glucose) in
the blood – dropping below about 4 millimoles per litre (mmol). Although
often a condition mainly associated with diabetes, non-diabetics may
experience an imbalance in sugar levels after delaying or missing meals,
in addition to fasting, or exercising on an insufficient food intake.
If the brain does not receive enough glucose then symptoms of
hypoglycaemia can begin, which include: headache, migraine, nausea,
sweating, confusion, faintness, and hypothermia. A prolonged glucose
tolerance test can be carried out to find out if you are hypoglycaemic;
this measures your body’s ability to process sugar.

Medication

If you are taking medication and also experience excessive sweating,
the two may actually be linked. One of the most common culprits in this
regards is antidepressants as they can raise levels of stress hormones
such as noradrenaline, resulting in more perspiration – commonly at
night. Other medications known to cause sweating are iron tablets,
antibiotics, blood pressure medications and cold and flu remedies
containing pseudo-ephedrine. An often overlooked drug also responsible
for increased sweating is nicotine. When you smoke, the nicotine you
inhale causes the body to emit a chemical called acetylcholine, which
stimulates your sweat glands.

Thyroid problems

Persistent sweating could be an indicator you have an overactive
thyroid (hyperthyroidism). This basically means your thyroid gland is
generating too much thyroid hormone. This increases the rate of the
body’s metabolism, resulting in symptoms such as tremors (shaking),
weight loss, feeling tired, muscle weakness, thinning of hair and
anxiety. In addition, when too much thyroid hormone is produced, the
sweat glands are stimulated and more sweat is emitted than usual.

Pregnancy and menopause

Women have to deal with a multitude of sweating episodes whilst still
in their reproductive period. Pregnant women may feel extra-hot due to a
rise in hormone levels, blood flow and metabolism.

During the menopause, women’s oestrogen levels decrease which impacts
the body’s internal temperature gauge. Sweating however combats these
hot flushes. On the plus side, pregnancy sweat is likely to be odourless
and women can alleviate the problem to some degree by wearing light,
breathable fabrics, remain cool by having a refreshing shower or bath,
and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

So how much is ‘too much’ with regards to sweat? Well, it can differ
from person-to-person, and can depend on the type of activities a person
is generally involved in. For example, a highly active individual such
as a labourer or gym enthusiast would be expected to sweat large
amounts. Whereas office workers in a climate-controlled building would
usually be expected to sweat very little and for somebody who sweats
whilst remaining sat calmly at their desk could be deemed to be have
hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

As many people have varying ‘sweat needs’, doctors sometimes have
difficulty in determining what constitutes as ‘too much sweating’.
However, if you believe you are sweating far too much than you should
be, Medical Specialists Pharmacy advise you speak to your doctor in case there is an underlying heath condition behind the problem.

Commuting to work with your bike? – Straight Dope Message Board

The suit thing is much more difficult than the sweating. As runner pat said, if you shower and use deodorant before you leave, body odor shouldn’t be a problem. Having a shower would be a nice way to cool down but when I ride to work (13 miles with significant inclines) I show up drenched with sweat and just towel off and cool down at my desk for ten minutes before changing into work clothes.

My office is business casual, so I just toss a pair of khakis, button down shirt, undershirt, socks and shorts into a dry bag with my wallet and phone. I wear bicycle shoes with cleats so I leave a pair of shoes in the office. Wearing a suit and tie every day, I would definitely transport clothing by car as Kyrie Eleison suggests, but I wouldn’t (and don’t) let a lack of shower stop me from riding.

I would definitely suggest getting a rack and panniers. Carrying a backpack on a bike sucks. Even if you’re not carrying clothing, I recommend getting a dry bag. I use a 20L Seal Line but for just wallet, phone and other small items, the 5L is probably sufficient. The 20L fills up a full bag on my panniers. You can opt to drive in on rainy mornings but there’s not much you can do on a rainy evening after you’ve already biked in. Which also reminds me to recommend a blinking headlight and tail light. Even if you don’t plan to ride after dark, they’re a necessity in the rain and even wise to use in overcast conditions. I don’t use mine in bright daylight, but I wear jerseys with the word “screaming” in their color description, so consider using them all the time if you prefer more subdued bicycle clothing.

AP not sweating details on stories – Patheos

A reader passed along this gem from the Associated Press that begins:

SAN FRANCISCO DE YARE, Venezuela — The descendants of African slaves donned masks and bright red costumes as they danced through the streets of this small Venezuelan town on Thursday for its annual commemoration of Corpus Cristi.

Young men beat drums and shook maracas as the “devils” paraded through the streets and people gathered to celebrate Corpus Cristi, a Roman Catholic holiday celebrating the transformation of the body and blood of Christ into bread and wine.

Um, come again? A “Roman Catholic holiday celebrating the transformation of the body and blood of Christ into bread and wine?” I’m actually of the mindset that 100 percent of educated people should have a passing knowledge of what the Eucharist means to traditional Christians. But even if you think that’s too much to expect, I’m sure we all agree that reporters and editors on stories about the Eucharist should have a passing knowledge of it, right?

The error is repeated throughout a 16-photo slideshow over at Huffington Post. Each caption includes the error, including this one:

Men dressed as a dancing devils perform on the streets in San Francisco de Yare, Venezuela, Thursday, May 30, 2013. I’m going to go ahead and let (HuffPo commenter) MirrorMonkey take it from here:

What incompetents who humorously claim to be “professional journalists” wrote this gross public display of doltish ignorance?

Corpus Christi is certainly not a “Catholic holiday celebrating the transformation of the body and blood of Christ into bread and wine.” It is instead a Catholic solemnity that commemorates exactly the opposite: namely, how in the Eucharist, mere bread and wine are transformed into the true Body and Blood of Christ. Reversing it, as the writer did, is as clueless as saying that a wedding ceremony celebrates the transformation of a married couple into two unmarried people who will live apart.

Furthermore, in a Corpus Christi procession, priests don’t ” carry sacramental bread.” If it were believed to be mere bread, there would be no point in carrying it and honoring it at all. Instead, Catholics believe that regardless of any appearances of bread (that is, the “accidents”), the reality of the Eucharist is that it isn’t bread at all, but is really and truly the Body of Jesus Christ. The priests therefore carry what they believe to be Jesus Christ through the streets — which is why the feast is called (doh!) Corpus Christi, or the Body of Christi.

I know that reporters today are not expected to know anything about the subjects of their stories, but it is unfortunate that the total lack of basic cultural knowledge is now tolerated among those who are supposed to be their editors as well.

Reporters writing about Corpus Christi festivals might consult this page or this one or this one.

Gender Differences and Why They Shouldn't Matter – I HATE MEN

Men and women are different in many ways, this much is clear. Some of these differences are intrinsic because of biology, while others aren’t. Despite these differences, men and women can still find compatibility. But some other times, relationships end because of gender differences, but some traits are tolerated more easily than others. I think this has a lot to do with the human fabricated division between gender characteristics that are biological, and those that are mental.

A lot of the time, I find that when a man and a woman are in a relationship, both of them complain about an aspect of the other person that is for the most part inherent to their gender. ie: he wants sex too often, she wants cuddling too often. But what’s funny to me is that rarely do couples complain about biological differences between them, only mental differences. A man might see very affection focused as a deal breaker, but not the fact that a woman has a period for instance. Or an example with women, deal breaker if they think he’s too horny, but if she had a problem with how much he sweats, it isn’t likely to be a deal breaker. This is very interesting regarding humanity and what we deem as controllable and not controllable – or really, what we are able to choose about ourselves. For some reason, humanity separates the tangible biological events like sweating and periods, from those of the brain like libido and affection. This seems to me like a strange divide to make, since what is the brain if not biological? It is run solely by hormone secretions, neurotransmitters, nerve signals sent from all over the body, etc. I don’t see where choice comes into play there. We can’t choose our brain, unless we feel compelled to ingest large amount of hormones for whatever reason (I don’t agree with doing this because I don’t think humans know enough about the brain to start messing with hormone levels to try to fix something they think is “wrong” with a person’s brain, but that’s another topic). So why do we judge so harshly the feelings that come from hormones and instincts of our respective genders? I don’t see myself (and many other women) feeling like I don’t really desire affection any time soon, much like many men probably won’t see themselves desiring sex any less. This isn’t our fault. This is simply the way nature engineered us.

I’m not at all saying that we shouldn’t judge the actions of people, just that their thoughts are their own, and how is it somehow better to want affection over sex or vice versa? Neither is morally better or worse than the other. Both are very natural processes, and rarely result in harm of another human being. These differences in relationship needs are very tied to gender, most likely because of the different hormone levels and/or instincts so it makes no more sense to judge a person’s relationship feelings than it does to say “you’re evil because you have a period” or “it’s sinful to grow facial hair” It makes no sense to make moral judgements on a person’s thoughts, especially when they’re so heavily linked to our genders. So in my mind at least, when women expect men to be less focused on sex, or men expect women to be less snuggly and affectionate, in essence they’re expecting that they become more like their own gender (being gay for the win? XD) which is an unrealistic expectation and kind of a silly one.

As a concluding remark, I’ll say that these judgements shouldn’t happen because as well as the reasons I said above, promoting tolerance is a very good goal to have. If we don’t promote tolerance, we are promoting prejudice. I’d rather have the former over the latter.

Rafael Nadal Undisputed King of Clay | 10sBalls | Tennis can't be …

Rafael Nadal blew Roger  Federer off the court. You kind of wonder what the outcome would have been if it was still a 3 out of 5  set final . Would Rafael had won in an hour and a half ? Would Roger  who we know likes 3 out of 5 settled into the match ? Would Roger  have found his timing or lost his nerves ? We won’t know. But one things for certain. Rafael did no stalling today. He played like Agassi. Fast. Fast. Fast. One point  to another. It’s a steam roll when Agassi would do it we would call it the “A train ” came thru ,or the “AA” train .
The first set was over in a blink. It was less than a half an hour. The first serve percentages are really interesting. For the most part you’d like that number to be not less than 60 percent .. Maybe 65. But the guys really flip flopped on those numbers. First set Roger  had an 82 percent and Rafa had 64 percent. Ok. Second set Rafa  went up to 79 but Rogers dropped to 39 percent. Yikes. Did one of the twins keep Rogi  up all night ? Was it words with Mirka ? The haircut ? What ? Too much gelato ? He rarely sweats much but today his light green shirt was wet. Front and back but he never changed it. Was it nerves that causes extra sweating. Was it his back ? Was his back strapped  or wrapped ? Whatever it was we are not sure but for sure it was something. Rafael deserves the win. He earned it. It was just a totally disappointing match up between 2 great players , 2  great Champions, 2 great Nike players .

Roberto Mancini sweating over his Man City future | The Sun |Sport

ROBERTO MANCINI was last night sweating on his Manchester City future after
seeing his side flop dismally in the FA Cup final.

The Etihad chief awoke to reports that Malaga’s Manuel Pellegrini had been in
talks about replacing him next season.

He was angry that City had not killed off the rumours about Pellegrini.

And following the 1-0 Wembley defeat to Wigan, he said he will know his fate
after Sunday’s league game against Norwich, when his position is reviewed by
the club’s Abu Dhabi owners.

He said: “I know football and anything can happen. In one or two weeks you
will know if it’s true or not.

“If it’s not true then a lot of stupid things have been written. If it’s true,
then I’m stupid.

“It’s not my problem if I will retain my job.

MAN CITY coach hopes two wins from club’s last two league games can help make up for painful Wembley loss

“I will work at 100 per cent always. I am sure that we have done a good job
for three years. My contract is for four years — not one.

“You’ve continued to speak about this for the last six months and for the last
two weeks, it’s been too much.

“I don’t know why the club didn’t stop this.

“It’s rubbish, this speculation.

“But we will see in two weeks — maybe one week, when the season ends — if it’s
true.”

There has been no public backing for Mancini from chairman Khaldoon al Mubarak
or new chief executive Ferran Soriano and his director of football Txiki
Begiristain.

The club held a board meeting yesterday morning yet there were still no
assurances for the Italian that he will be in charge when next season kicks
off.

SUNSPORT duo Shaun Custis and Martin Blackburn hail Wigan’s super Spaniard at Wembley

Mancini admitted his team had been a long way below their best against a
superbly organised Latics.

But he defended the season which will see them finish as runners- up in both
Premier League and FA Cup.

He said: “How many teams did better than us this year? One. Maybe Swansea
makes two.

“I don’t think we played a good game. That’s unusual for us in a final. We
didn’t play our football and we had some problems.

“We didn’t deserve to lose but, when you concede a goal in the last minute,
it’s difficult.

“But we had two incredible chances to score. If we couldn’t win it, then I am
happy for Roberto Martinez.

“I am sorry for my players, the club and the supporters because there were
40,000 here.

“Our target when we started was to try to win the Premier League again. But I
think our mistakes started in the last month because we didn’t improve
enough.

“I am disappointed because I want to win every year but I know football well
enough to know why I didn’t win this year.

“I am responsible because I am the manager but last year Manchester United
didn’t win anything.

“Second position is a good year for us. It’s better to win the Community
Shield than nothing at all.”
