New Diet Provides Relief for Psoriasis and Arthritis Sufferers …

A new diet, created by Mike O’Brien, has the potential to help those who suffer from psoriasis and arthritis get back to living an active and pain free lifestyle. O’Brien, who has dealt with the autoimmune diseases psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis for decades, has seen miraculous results while using the diet.

Psoriasis is an uncomfortable, and sometimes painful, skin disease that causes the body to create skin cells too fast. This abnormal growth causes the skin to become thick, white and flakey. Rheumatoid arthritis is most common in joints in the hands and feet. The disease causes these joints to become inflamed and makes using them very painful.

One of the unique things about this diet is that it has been created by someone who has first hand experience with the diseases it treats. O’Brien understands very well the effects psoriasis and arthritis can have, including pain and immobility, and it was those painful symptoms that prompted him to create the diet.

Before implementing the diet, O’Brien had psoriasis on large portions of his body including his legs, back, elbows, forearms  and torso. At one point, his arthritis was so acute, he couldn’t straighten his arms and his fingers and many other places ached, forcing him to leave the workforce.

For years, O’Brien had looked, unsuccessfully, for ways to treat his pain and other symptoms. After seeing several doctors and trying different treatment options as varied as methotrxate, and hypnotherapy, he decided to try a new approach to treating his psoriasis: changing his diet. The first step O’Brien took was eliminating red meat and food high in protein and carbohydrates from his diet. He later added supplements to the diet, and today, is living proof that he has found a winning combination.

The diet, which O’Brien found to be effective in treating both psoriasis and arthritis, has made it possible for him to do things he hasn’t been able to do for years. He can now bend over, kneel and get in and out of low seats without any pain. Things most people take for granted, like knocking on the door and getting in and out of the car, are things O’Brien can do pain free again for the first time in years.
The diet, which is available at psoriasis-inc.com is just US$32. It calls for eliminating some food entirely and eating other food in moderation, as well as taking dietary supplements. The diet can help people avoid eating food that will irritate or even worsen their auto immune diseases such as psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, making it possible to manage the diseases.

For many people, this diet doesn’t require drastic change, but it does require an understanding of what kind of food irritates psoriasis and arthritis and what food can lead to a pain free life.

This diet can be a very effective way for many psoriasis and arthritis sufferers to manage one or both of the diseases and get back to living a life where they aren’t restricted by immobility and pain.

About Psoriasis-inc.com

I was first afflicted with psoriasis towards the end of 1979. My doctor at the time advised me to consult alternative medicine people.

In the early to mid 90s I became aware that certain processed food that was high in protein and carbohydrates would adversely affect my psoriasis. So over the years I experimented with my diet but it was not until January 2010 when a naturopath hooked me up to a software program she had in her laptop and gave me some advice that things took a turn for the better.

During 2011 I was advised to make an appointment with Dr Joanne Cummings @ Back to Basic Wellness Centre in Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia. After some tests Dr Jo recommended adding a couple of supplements to my diet and when I followed her advice my arthritis symptoms started to improve. I continued to experiment with supplements, sometime as a liquid other times in a capsule and I have made major improvements to my arthritis; particularly to my knees where I have rheumatoid arthritis. Things I could not do before like bending my knees are now relatively easy to do and I can actually kneel down on either knee. Getting into and out of the car was real painful but it is a breeze now. I have added videos to the site showing me doing these things.

Unfortunately Dr Cummings closed her clinic in February 2013 and returned to England. Our loss is Englands gain.

Before I managed to get everything to come together simple everyday things like sitting in a low seat (I am sure you know what I mean there) or sitting on the sand or the ground was not possible mainly because of the pain in my knees. Had I have manged to sit down I would not have been able to get up unaided.

Learning About Psoriasis

Though we do not see it, the skin is constantly in action, shedding away its old cells and replacing them with brand new ones.

In some people though, that process becomes accelerated, resulting in too many new skin cells being pushed up top, which in turn leads to a condition called psoriasis, and it manifests itself in the form of small and thick skin patches that can appear anywhere on the body, but mostly arms and legs.

Though it is not contagious, painful or itchy for most people, in 15% to 20% of cases the condition does become debilitating with the onset of joint pain and inflammation. It affects men and women equally and typically manifests itself between the ages of ten and thirty.

We are not a hundred percent sure yet, but a number of factors contribute to the development of psoriasis, with the most important ones being one’s genetic predisposition and diet. As you can guess, though fighting the condition may be an uphill battle, there are ways you can make the climb easier, and one of them is making sure that you are eating the best foods you can to destroy psoriasis.

Using Foods to Help

There is still some research to be done on the subject, we know without a doubt that a diet rich in antioxidants (mainly gotten from fruits and vegetables) is one of the best ways of ensuring that you have a healthy and functional skin. Also, foods with plenty of vitamin C can help to protect your skin against radical damage caused by the environment, not to mention it contains a fair amount of antioxidants as well.

In addition, people with psoriasis are commonly observed to have low levels of vitamin A, zinc and selenium, meaning you should definitely try to cram some of them into your daily diet. You may also want to increase your beta-carotene intake as it is converted to vitamin A in the body.

Omega-3 fatty acids can also help with psoriasis, mainly by reducing the inflammation which may accompany it. As a matter of fact, a study demonstrated that people who have higher levels of leukotrienes (an inflammatory agent) are more likely to develop psoriasis, and you can get rid of most of them with the above-mentioned fatty acids.

Finally, it ought to be mentioned that even though further studies on the subject are necessary, so far it was observed that patients who have a gluten-free diet and are not overweight have an easier time getting rid of the condition.

To conclude, psoriasis may not be the worst condition you could get out there (far from it), but it is unsightly and if left untreated, it can end up making your daily life something akin to a real nightmare. Having the right diet is the first step on the road to recovery from it, and if you are lucky and dedicated enough, it may very well be the last one as well.

But since it is know that the frequency and intensity of outbreaks varies due to specific reasons, knowing those reasons is the first line of defense at home. Humidity is a very important requirement when it comes to psoriasis remedy. There are several forms of psoriasis, and each form has unique characteristics that allow dermatologists to visually identify psoriasis to determine what type, or types, of psoriasis is present. Joining forums to fit your age group really helps with venting and getting opinions of others that have been there and still is there in your position. ‘My legs from the knees down were scabby and flaky and just ugly. The actual areas with this disease appear a lot more not the same as the other sections found on other types of skin psoriasis. Studies show that psoriasis is actually a genetically acquired disease that is why, it is very difficult to find ways to be able to cure it. Dietary control is always important as well, considering the frequency of allergic triggering.

Prolonged use of Cortisone can also cause unwanted side effects. Leave a pinch of natural salt on your tongue and you will notice that it fades away in a short time. Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disorder that leads to the formation of dry plaques on the skin. Great for using on psoriasis lesions on the scalp to loosen dead skin. Every now and then while sifting through the hundreds of garbage scalp psoriasis treatments that come through our doors we come across a product that renivigorates us and fills us all with hope once again. Topical Steroids -Over the counter corticosteroids have been found to be very effective in treating penile psoriasis. This relieves itching and hydrates the skin layers. The vast majority of commercial fruit is sprayed with toxic chemicals, many of which cannot be washed off. Being in the sun can dramatically help improve the condition.

Cara Delevingne speaks candidly about her battle with Psoriasis …

Catwalk model, Cara Delevingne, confirmed this week that she suffers from psoriasis – a chronic, uncomfortable and often painful skin condition that causes silvery scaling, redness and itching of the skin. Rightfully so, Miss Delevingne has linked her flare-ups to stress, a known trigger for psoriasis.

“It only happened during the Fashion Weeks, which are, of course, the worst time of year for me to be covered in scabs… I was being painted by people to cover the scabs. Psoriasis is an auto-immune disease, and I’m sensitive”. Miss Delevingne said.

Cara Delevingne, 21, is not alone in her battle with psoriasis. It is a relatively common skin condition affecting at least 2% of the global population – and is also most likely to occur between the ages of 20 and 30 years old. In fact, other young celebrities such as Britney Spears, Kim Kardashian and LeAnn Rimes are known sufferers of psoriasis. Psoriasis can be quite mild, but in certain individuals it is severe and can affect quality of life.  Hopefully the model’s brave decision to speak up about her affliction will help others not to feel ashamed or embarrassed about seeking help.

What Is Psoriasis? And Does it Cause Hair Loss?

After hearing the news of Cara’s battle with psoriasis, Philip Kingsley called us personally from his holiday to comment:

“Psoriasis is a genetically determined disorder which results from too rapid cell turnover. While psoriasis usually occurs all over your body, it is most common on the elbows and knees. However, it can also crop up on the scalp and can be quite severe. Luckily psoriasis rarely causes hair loss, so Miss Delevingne, and others affected, should not become overly stressed or worried about losing their hair. There are also highly effective treatments availableAt my Clinics in London and New York we soften and then remove the scales using creams I formulated with coal tar, sulphur and salicylic acid.  Interestingly enough, psoriasis often clears up a bit in the summer months due to an increase in exposure to natural sunlight – moderated UV light therapy can be quite helpful”.

In terms of Cara’s stressful job and lifestyle, Philip agrees that this could aggravate and contribute to her condition: “The exact cause of psoriasis is still a slight mystery, but certain illness, stress and food intolerances are all thought possible triggers.”

However, Philip cautions that we do not self-diagnose as psoriasis can often be mistaken for other skin conditions such as seborrhoeic dermatitis or pityriasis amiantacea.

“I frequently see cases in my consulting rooms when a young man or woman has been treating themselves for psoriasis when they in fact have something else.  I applaud Miss. Delevingne for her candidness and bravery, but urge others not to self-diagnose from the pictures they see”.

This Week's Q&A (Talking Bread, Pregnancy, Soy, Psoriasis, and …

You’ve got questions…

Q: What kind of bread do you suggest when done with the reboot?

A: See my post, Looking for Plant-Based (Vegan) Bread.

To summarize quickly: Look for breads that are 1. vegan (no milk, eggs, whey, butter, or other animal products), 2. 100% whole-wheat, and 3. do not contain oil. Also try to find breads that do not have a sweetener (i.e. honey or sugar), have less than 5 ingredients, and buy sprouted if you can.

However, remember that bread is not a whole food, even if it’s made from whole wheat. There is no bread tree 😉 Bread should accent the diet, but not be a staple food. Focus on fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains as your main food source. Try the meal plans if you need some tasty inspiration or dietary guidance.

Q: I’m 21 years old, vegan, and I just found out I was pregnant a couple of days ago. I’m not sure what kinds of foods I should be eating as a vegan while I’m pregnant to ensure that my baby as well I will be healthy. I’m really worried!

A: Congrats! We’ve done a few posts on pregnancy you can check out. The short of it? All women who are pregnant have higher nutritional demands, regardless of their diet, but you can meet those demands with your plant-based diet — and it’s better for you and baby.

Q: Isn’t there a hormone effect with soy?

A: There isn’t a hormone effect with soy, that’s a myth. Dairy, however, does do all sorts of wild things to our hormones and bodies (and not in a good way). I always tell people if they can only give up one thing, to get off dairy.

Here are some posts to check out (many of them have links to research, etc by doctors).

Q: Can a plant-based diet help with psoriasis?

a: A plant-based diet has been shown to help with psoriasis. Animal foods cause inflammation and plant foods can help decrease inflammation. A study in Sweden showed psoriasis sufferers who ate vegan/plant-based had fewer symptoms than those who ate animal products. Acidic foods like wheat, citrus, tomatoes, soda, coffee, pineapple, tend to also aggravate psoriasis in most patients. One of our past HOWs, Mary Lou, found diet helped.

Q: Is there anything that you can suggest to get a flat stomach? Even with the weight that I’ve lost, I still have a pretty big stomach that I’m constantly trying to hide.

A: Abs are made in the kitchen. We all have a 6-pack, it just happens to be hiding under fat for most of us.

The more weight you lose, the flatter it will get. I find a lot of my clients were surprised at how much they have to lose to get a flat stomach. I know I was. I lost 15 lbs. Then 30. Then crept to 40 and finally my midsection was starting to look better. I couldn’t believe how long it took — how much overall weight I needed to lose.

It’s possible, but there’s no skirting around the need to reduce total body fat. There is no amount of sit-ups, or crunches, magic ab machine on an infomercial etc. that will get you an ab-tastic midsection if you still have a high percentage of body fat. At least, that was my experience as a personal trainer :)

Also, for some men and women, the midsection is where they store the bulk of their weight (compared to butt, hips, back, etc.) and for people with those shapes (i.e., apple shape), it takes even longer, since you will really have to whittle down the body fat. I’ve only had one client in the history of my clients that couldn’t get her stomach to flatten with diet and weight-loss, and we discovered that there was a medical reason. She’d split the muscles in her abdominal wall when carrying twins. Nothing was going to fix that but surgery, unfortunately — but she was the only case.

That said, your guts are pretty heavy. Doing sit-ups and crunches can help (even if you have weight to lose) because it will strengthen and tighten those muscles, pulling the abdominal wall back and holding in all those heavy guts pushing against it. Many of my clients saw noticeable changes once they started incorporating some ab work. They didn’t have a 6-pack, but their belly didn’t protrude as much. Small victories! Instead of doing “ab exercises” like crunches that everyone hates, I always had my clients do movements that engage their abs. I find a lot of yoga poses accomplish this beautifully.

Psoriasis Diet Plan: Forskolin as cAMP booster for more energy …

Indian herb Coleus Forskohlii (contains the forskolin) is actually one of the best supplements that I have ever tried. Didn’t use it for psoriasis although there are people who cured themselves by taking forskolin daily for about 2-3 months. It is also used in ayurvedic medicine as treatment for psoriasis, asthma, increased intraocular pressure, hypothyroidism, low activity of immune system, and for inhibiting the platelet aggregation amongst the others.

I took it just for more energy multiple times for a few days so it did nothing to my psoriasis. However I think that after about 2 months course you could see an improvement since this herb is used as psoriasis remedy for the centuries.

You can feel the difference in energy in about two days of taking it on empty stomach in dose about 25 mg of forskolin (which is a 10 % extract in one 250 mg capsule or 20 % in one 125 mg capsule of dried powdered Coleus Forskohlii root) in the morning and before going to bed.

Since the herbs are really powerful in modulating various processes in the body you definitely shouldn’t take forskolin as supplement more than 3 months in a row.

It can definitely help you to loose some weight but the diet is always the most important factor! You can’t think that you can eat 4 pounds (2 kg) of junk food a day and some supplement in one little capsule will cure you or melt the fat away.

Forskolin can improve many health issues since it affects the cAMP (cyclic Adenosine Monophosphate) concentration in the cells through activating the enzyme adenylate cyclase. Psoriasis is the disease which is accompanied by increased cGMP levels (cyclic Guanosine Monophosphate) and low cAMP levels in the cells. However if high cGMP levels affect the psoriasis pathogenesis directly is not known.

Weight gain

Also keep in mind that you can also gain some weight using the forskolin. It all depends on your body and if you are overweight or underweight. It is not 100 % sure but those who are overweight despite exercising and normal Calorie intake should loose some weight taking the forskolin and those who can’t gain weight despite eating a lot of Calories should put on some weight thanks to forskolin. It is partially caused by improved digestion by very effective stimulating the stomach acid secretion as well as helping the pancreas to produce the digestive enzymes.

Psoriasis Diet Plan: When I will be healthy, I will be happy

Many people who have psoriasis think about healing it in the very bad way in my opinion. The title of this post express it in a few words but let me write more about it in the next few lines.

Many sufferers feel bad about going out with the red scaly skin and rather they are sitting home waiting for time when they get well. Although many people don’t say that still many of them think:

“Now I am not happy because of psoriasis, I don’t go out, I am not meeting people because of my skin. But as soon as my psoriasis will go away I will be happy an will hanging out with others. I’ll be enjoying my life.”

This attitude is really bad in my opinion.

Why?

Because it is much harder to heal psoriasis if you are not happy. I say be happy now, then you can be cured. Waiting till you get cured and thinking that then you will be happy doesn’t work. You have to be happy now because your body listen to your mind. Not enjoying your life doesn’t help cure your psoriasis faster. It has the opposite effect.

You should go out with friends, breathe the oxygen from the outside air which is one of the most important factors in treatment of many chronic illnesses, exercise, nourish your body as well as mind.

Just sitting and waiting for body to fight off psoriasis means that you are not helping the body. If your body wouldn’t do its best to fight with psoriasis causes already you would be covered from head to toe now. And even in that case it would still trying to resolve the problem but was too weak and that’s why you, your mind and will should help it in any way you can.

Psoriasis and food allergies… | HartsSpace

Good morning HartsSpace! Today I’d like to discuss another skin disorder that affects millions of Americans every year… Psoriasis. This is a typically chronic auto immune disorder in which the immune system incorrectly identifies the skin cells (or some of the patient’s skin cells) as foreign objects that need to be attacked. When the immune system attacks these cells, they change the function of these cells and NOT for the better. Instead of these skin cells continuing their natural life cycle of reproducing and sloughing off, they begin hyper producing skin cells in the affected area without sloughing off. This produces excessive skin (or thick skin) which then triggers and inflammatory response which makes the skin red and swollen. Sometimes the psoriasis patient can even develop white looking plaques on top of the red rash. This disorder is unfortunately quite uncomfortable for the patient and sometimes  painful.

The causes of psoriasis are not known with 100 % certainty yet, but scientists do believe there is a genetic component. They also suspect there to be environmental factors that trigger the immune system to over react causing a psoriasis flare up. For example, it is fairly common for children to develop at least a temporary psoriasis episode when they have strep throat. Some other reported triggers of psoriasis are stress, certain medications, surguries, and potentially allergies both dietary and environmental.

Conventional treatments to treat psoriasis are topical creams like corticosteroids to fight the surface inflammation, and there are also some light treatments that can help those who are not helped by topical creams. The light therapy can be a UVB treatment at the doctor’s office, a UVB lamp at home, or a laser treatment at the doctor’s office. Sunlight is another potential way for psoriasis patients to get some UVB light, however sunlight can also present some sunburn hazards… so this treatment regime needs to be discussed with a doctor.

So what about food? Just like we discussed in yesterday’s blog, an anti inflammatory diet is recommended to any one suffering from any kind of inflammatory condition. In fact, an anti inflammatory diet is recommended to everyone since there will most often be some inflammation going on inside your body regardless of whether or not you are aware of it. In addition to an anti inflammatory diet, it is quite important for those who suffer from psoriasis to rule out whether or not they have a food allergy that is triggering this. Gluten in particular tends to be a food allergy associated with psoriasis. One study out of europe found significant improvement in psoriasis after patients embarked on three months of a gluten free diet (1). As we discussed yesterday, the elimination diet (which eliminates about 12 common allergen foods) is one way to determine which of those 12 common allergens is aggrivating your psoriasis. Not every patient is the same, and not everyone has the same triggers. However, if you are not quite ready for a full elimination diet, perhaps a gluten free diet is worth a shot. HartsSpace is happy to help you design and implement a gluten free diet for you… Please give us a call today if you’d like some help!

Have a healthy, un-inflammed day :)
