Sweat is composed of sodium, chloride, and potassium. Water produced from sweat glands carries these 3 ingredients to the surface of the skin therefore creating sweat. Sweating helps our body stay cool. Sweat also improves circulation and accelerates metabolism of the body.

It is perfectly natural to sweat. Normally, people who live in areas with warm temperatures sweat more. Sweat is also produced during exercise or in response to situations that makes a person feel nervous, angry, embarrassed, or afraid. However, when sweating becomes significantly excessive, this may be aserious sign of an underlying medical condition. Excessive sweating can lead to discomfort, both physical and emotional.

Excessive sweating is called Hyperhidrosis. People with this condition have the tendency to sweat even if the weather is cold and even if there is no physical activity involved. On the other hand, the medical term used to describe excessive armpit sweating is Axillary Hyperhidrosis. Typically the person with this condition sweats more in the underarms, usually but not always accompanied by an unpleasant odor.

Individuals suffering from this condition often experience clothes stains in the armpit area. More often than not, excessive sweating of the underarms causes embarrassment which results in low self-esteem.

There are ways on how to prevent sweating on the underarms. Antiperspirant is the most common and available treatment. Advanced treatments for hyperhidrosis includeIontophoresis, Botox injections, and in extreme cases surgical procedures may be done to address the problem.

Cure for Sweat: Swamp Pits: How to Stop Armpit Sweating For Good …

I used to have what I call “swamp pits.” I had constant sweaty armpits. I mean it was like I had a garden hose tucked under each arm. It was really embarrassing to always have armpit stains on all my shirts and sometimes I’d have to change shirts a few times a day. That was before I learned how to stop armpit sweating for good. I learned that there are quite a few ways to treat sweating that’s confined to one area of the body, like the hands or feet, or armpits in my case. I’ll share with you the different treatments and what worked for me:

The first thing I did was go to the doctor. My doc is a really conventional guy and he laid out to me the conventional treatments for stopping armpit sweating. Here are the basic options:

-Botox-oral medications-surgery-iontophoresis

The Botox treatment involves injecting Botox into the sweat glands underneath the skin. This procedure works really well, but it’s not permanent and can be quite expensive.

There are a few oral medications that can be prescribed for someone who has excessive sweating. One of them is Robinul, which is usually used to treat ulcers but is effective in treating severe sweating too. There are some side effects however, such as headaches, dizziness and nausea.

A surgical procedure, called Thoracis Sympathectomy, involves making small incisions in the chest and cutting the nerve that runs to the sweat glands in the armpits. Frankly, this one sounds dangerous and I would only recommend it in really extreme cases.

Iontophoresis is very promising. The patient puts their hands or feet in a basin of water while a light electrical charge passes through it. This somehow numbs the sweat glands for a time, reducing sweating. Unfortunately my sweating problem was confined to my underarms, so this treatment wasn’t an option.

I wasn’t really interested in Botox or surgery, so I tried the medication for a while. It worked ok, but the side effects made me quit the meds after about 2 weeks.

That’s when I learned about natural at home remedies for stopping armpit sweating. The most effective remedies I read about were:

-Aluminum based antiperspirants-baking soda-changing diet-wearing cotton clothes

Some antiperspirants work better than others. Aluminum based antiperspirants seem to work the best at eliminating major underarm sweating.

Baking soda is another easy trick that you might want to try out. Baking soda is great at absorbing moisture and odors. Just take about a teaspoon of baking soda and rub it on your pits!

A good diet is important for good health and I had some success simply eating better. I also avoided spicy foods, which can trick the brain into thinking the body is hotter than it really is. There is some evidence that iodine rich foods like fish and eggs can cause excessive sweating, but I didn’t notice any difference avoiding these foods. Wearing cotton clothes can help keep you cool and dry by keeping air flow at a maximum.

You will have to decide what methods work best for you. Personally, I avoided the medical treatments because of the cost and side effects. When I decided to figure out how to stop my armpit sweating, I found the natural methods much more effective, but your mileage may vary. Good luck!

Botox: Control Excessive Sweating With Botox

Botox is well known for treating wrinkles, but it can also be used to stop excessive sweating. Our bodies produce sweat to keep cool. But it’s not just hot and humid weather that causes us to sweat: Exercise, physical stress, emotional stress and nervousness can also make you sweat. People who sweat abnormally are said to be suffering from a condition referred to as primary hyperhidrosis and it most noticeably affects the palms of the hands, the feet and the armpits. It is becoming interestingly common for such patients to visit their dermatologist for botox injections to treat this condition.

Our skin, specifically the middle layer, or dermis isn’t made up of just collagen and elastin, it is full of sweat glands, hair follicles, sebaceous glands (these produce oil), blood vessels and nerve endings. Our body secretes sweat from two types of glands, the eccrine and apocrine glands.

The Eccrine glands are located in the skin, all over the body. Apocrine glands, on the other hand, are located in places on the body where there’s a high concentration of hair follicles, such as the scalp, armpits and groin region. These glands are controlled by the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, the command centre that also controls involuntary bodily functions such as breathing, digestion, body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure. When there is an increase in body temperature, your sympathetic nervous system automatically signals the sweat glands to cool your body.

When Botox is injected into the skin, the treatment affects the signal between the nerve endings and the sweat glands in the dermis. The botulism toxin binds itself to the nerve endings and acts like a roadblock. It blocks the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, a chemical our nerve cells make to communicate with each other and this disrupts the message sent from the nerve endings to stimulate the production of sweat. Therefore, the amount of sweat secreted drastically reduces.

Laser Treatment Rids Excessive Underarm Sweating | UC Health

Quinter_Suzanne lab coatPeople who suffer from excessive underarm sweating now have an additional treatment option to rid themselves of an often embarrassing, and sometimes even debilitating, medical condition called axillary hyperhidrosis.

“For some people it’s a condition that rules their life,” says UC Health dermatologist Suzanne Quinter, MD, the only physician in Greater Cincinnati to offer laser treatment designed specifically to address excessive underarm sweating.

Those with the condition, she says, can be affected in life altering ways which range from having to limit their clothing options with regard to color and fabric to more severe emotional issues such as isolation due to embarrassment from stains and odor.

Axillary hyperhidrosis is the result of overactive sweat glands. Two types of glands are located under the arm just below the skin’s surface: the eccrine gland which secretes an odorless, clear fluid to cool the body and the odor producing apocrine gland.

Quinter, also an associate professor of dermatology at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, says the laser treatment requires two treatment sessions and destroys the sweat glands. These glands, she says, do not regenerate which offers long-term results in a very short treatment time.

“Luckily, one’s body does not need underarm sweating to regulate body temperature as there are sweat glands throughout the body’s hair-bearing surfaces,” she says, adding that prior to this technology, the only other long-term treatment option was a lifetime of semi-annual botulinum toxin (trade name Botox) injections.

However, with some patients botulinum toxin works and for others it doesn’t block the sweat ducts enough, she says; and while prescription antiperspirants or medications are also available, some patients do not respond to these treatments and there are known side effects to the medications such as mild to severe allergic reactions.

Since the laser treatment is considered a cosmetic procedure, as are the botulinum toxin injections, Quinter says she recommends the laser treatment for a faster and more effective result. Although the laser treatment procedure requires numbing of the area, the known side effects are temporary pain and mild to moderate swelling which resolves with time, she says.

“It’s basically two treatments and you are done with underarm sweating,” she says, adding that the laser treatments are currently only approved for under the arms.

The cost of treatment is approximately $3,000; however, Quinter says the cost of biannual botulinum toxin injections adds up to about the same amount after one year.

Quinter sees patients at UC Health Physicians Office North in West Chester.

How Does Botox Help Excessive Sweating? | Beauty High

Botox

Clearly, if there’s a time of year when you’re sweating more than usual, the summer is it. There are some individuals , however, who suffer from sweating so intense and consistent that it affects every aspect of their lives. It’s called axillary hyperhidrosis and it’s a real condition.

The good news is that there are real solutions to this issue, and one of them is Botox. But exactly how does it work? We turned to Dr. Meghan O’Brien, board-certified dermatologist for Physicians Formula, to get the specifics on how Botox can stop excessive sweating. Here’s the 411 on how it works:

Beauty High: There’s a lot of conversation about Botox being used to stem hyperhidrosis/excess sweating. How exactly can Botox help?
Dr. Meghan O’Brien: Botox is an FDA-approved treatment for axillary hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating of the armpits. It helps stop the nerve signal that tells the sweat glands to produce sweat, but only in the area that is treated.

What is the procedure involved in using Botox to stop excess sweating? One hour prior to the treatment topical numbing cream can be applied to minimize discomfort, although very often patients don’t find this necessary. The armpits are cleaned with an antiseptic wipe, then Botox is injected in a grid pattern in each armpit with a small needle. An average  of 15-25 injections are used, spaced about 1 cm apart with minimal pain.

Sometimes, a starch-iodine test is performed prior to the injections to highlight specific areas of the armpit where the sweating is more pronounced. For this, the patient does something that will cause them to sweat after application of iodine, which is then followed by starch. If this test is used, the Botox injections will be concentrated in the areas where there is more obvious sweating.

How many treatments are needed to see results? One treatment takes 3-4 days to start working, and can last anywhere from 4-to-almost-7 months. When the Botox wears off, another treatment is necessary.

Are there any side effects? Rarely, a small bruise may form at the site. It is possible to have a severe allergic reaction to the Botox. There are of course many more potential side effects listed with the medication, but I rarely see any of these side effects in the armpit area.

What is the approximate cost for the treatments? As an FDA-approved treatment, some health insurance plans will cover the treatment if other treatment options have failed. Out-of-pocket cost is about $1000 for one treatment.

Are there any patients who aren’t candidates for this type of treatment? Is there a minimum age requirement? You should not get Botox if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. There is no minimum age for treatment.

Sweat Pads for Excessive Underarm Sweating | Stop Sweating Spot

In the human history, people try almost anything to get rid of that excess sweat and body odor. They wash their sweaty areas daily, cover the odor with deodorants and perfumes, and wear strong fragrances but does that really work. Things have changed over the past but human body remains the same.

About 50% of the population will suffer for excess sweat problem and nothing seems to work at that time. Deodorants include antiperspirant and antiseptic ingredient that do kill the bacteria present in the sweat but these solutions completely seem to fail in moist and warm environment.

Right now we need a permanent solution for it or something that can really last for long. Today you can easily get underarm sweat pads that are thin, disposable and sticks to the underarm like a dress pad. The most embarrassing part of sweating it not just the odor it brings along but the wet patches it leaves behind which are quite visible. On drying, their patches turn white and at times they are so hard to remove that you do not feel like wearing that piece of clothing again.  This can be really annoying.

These underarm swear pads absorb excess sweat and are not at all expensive. It doesn’t need any maintenance, one pad works throughout the day and you do not need a strap to tie it either.  Some new clothing on the market even has a built in pocket or pad.

If body odor and sweat is causing you distress then these product are a must buy.  There are other treatments available for people who are suffering from hyperhidrosis which includes oral medication, bolulinum toxin type A injections and even a surgery that removes the sweat gland.

However, sweating is a natural process and it helps you cool down in case of overheating. If there are non-medical treatments available which can be noninvasive, why would you want to get into medical complications? You get them with various names like garment guards, underarm shields and dress shield.

No matter what you call them they are sure to protect your armpits and prevent further staining and wet marks. They are made of 100% cotton and the material used is very breathable and absorbent. Some brands even offer a vinyl layer that is sweat repelling to give extra protection against odor. You can get them in washable and disposable type so the choice is entirely yours. The product is quite easy to use and the best thing it does is keeps you fragrant throughout the day and saves you from unwanted embarrassment.
